How can I assign items to multiple categories that can then be used as dimensions?

I have a series of items that I've tagged with various categories (or attributes). Some fall into more than one category.

      ItemDescriptionTag
      1Widget

      A

      2GadgetB
      3Whatchamajig

      A,B

      4ThingamajigB,C

I'd like to be able to use category as a dimension, so that I could show the number of As, Bs, Cs, etc.

How can I structure my data so that Tableau will allow this? With the data set above, Tableau would see four different categories. But if I add a column for each category, I no longer have a single dimension to display.

I feel like there's a simple solution but right now it eludes me.
