Performance when using groups vs. calculated field

    Harley Ellenberger

I've got a "Product" dimension with 1,000 members.  Currently, I have Group of that dimension where each member is assigned to 1 of 15 "Categories".  So, each product belongs to only 1 category.

Would I get better performance using a calculated field instead of the groups?  Such as...

      CASE [PRODUCT]

      WHEN 'Product1' THEN 'Category1'

      WHEN 'Product2' THEN 'Category2'

      .

      .

      .

      WHEN 'Product1000' THEN 'Category15'

      ELSE 'NOT GROUPED'

      END

I'm using an extract on Tableau Server, so I'm assuming that with the calculated field I could optimize the extract and materialize the CASE statement in the extract.  It doesn't appear that the groups are materialized in the extract.
