# Group the measure with out dimension in the sheet

here is my Actual data set

 Actual  Data Set Customer OrderID A 1 B 2 A 3 C 4 B 5 D 6 A 7 B 8 C 9 E 10

Using this data set, I want show how may customer ordered how many times?

expected output like below

Dynamically created  this dimention Total # of times Ordered by Customer  Domension # of Customer Ordered Data 1 3 2 Data 2 2 1 Data 3 1 2

I want to show this in the Bar chart with sort order. when the user click the particular bar chart then I need to show detail data like

customer name , customer area etc...

I am not sure, we can achieve this in tableau.

I don't understand what Data 1 is.

• ###### 2. Re: Group the measure with out dimension in the sheet

we need to create that dimension dynamically because when you want to show bar chart or tree map based on total # of order by customer then you need one or more dimension for that. First of all I am not sure how to display those measure values in the table format with out dimension Since the first measure value by customer and second measure is # of customer.

I think, this is not possible in tableau unless write some data blending or something. I like to confirm with tableau expert that's why I posted this here.

Please attach sample data or screen shot or sample packaged workbook as your requirement is not clear as Alex said. Tableau is about tricks. Mostly things are doable by some tricks. In Tableau community you can find many scientists who can help you in solving your problem but before that you have to ask your problems with the attached file or worksheet so that people over here will be pretty much clear with your problem statement.

I am not sure what I am missing here, I already provided my actual Dataset as well as expected output .

When you look at the expected out , the first measure, 3 times ordered by A & B , 2 times ordered by C and 1 time ordered by D & E.

the second measure is 2 customer ordered 3 times, 1 customer ordered 2 times and 2 customer ordered 1 times.

I Like to use tree map  , my first measure as size & second measure in the tooltip/ text.

in order to use tree map, I need one or more dimension. I am not sure how to archive this.

I understand your frustration, but it is very difficult to answer your question with a typed out response.  Afterall, Tableau is a visually driven piece of software, and its hard to first "imagine" the solution in our heads, and then translate that into typed words.  We prefer packaged workbooks, where we can actually see and play with the data and provide a direct solution to your issue.   I hope that makes sense.

My suggestion is to take your sample dataset from your original post, throw it into Tableau, and mock up what you want a solution to look like based on that dataset.  If you do this, make sure you post a .TWBX (packaged workbook) file so the data is accessible.

As you mentioned , I have attached screen shot below, I am not sure how to attach my workbook here.

I gave the expected o/p also

Bar Chart

Tree Map

I hope, this might help you to understand what I am trying to achieve using this dataset.

 Customer OrderID A 1 B 2 A 3 C 4 B 5 D 6 A 7 B 8 C 9 E 10

To attach the workbook, go to the top right corner where it say "Use Advanced Editor", and then the "Attach" option will appear in the bottom right corner of this text editing window.

I have attached my workbook.

Attached are two ways to come up with the bar chart (I did kind of the opposite of what you drew out, in terms of how its laid out, but its the info you wanted).

The tree map is a little more difficult for me to figure out.  I think using the second method (using SIZE() to calculate the # instead of the other calc) for the bar chart, you may be able to get the tree map, but I was unable to figure it out.

Perhaps Jonathan Drummey can take a look and get that working for you.  Although, why do you need a tree map that shows the same information?

Note that when you create actions from these bar charts, you will need to click on the bar's HEADER, not the bar itself, in order to drill down to the correct results.  This is because the bar chunks are made up of the individual records.  Selecting the header of the bar is essentially like selecting the entire bar.

See the attached. One note is that the treemap won't return accurate results if used for a Filter Action, and there's no header to click on to work like there can be for a bar chart. This idea covers that scenario: http://community.tableau.com/ideas/2399.

I am not sure how you achieve this. I have tried the same thing but it's not working. am getting the below view

am I missing anything?

How did you change compute using into "Results are computed along Customer for each Distinct count of OrderID."

when I am trying to set the same thing but am getting "Results are computed along Customer".

Thank you so much. I figured out what I missed.

I'm glad you figured it out!
