To run a script on a remote server with inputs from Tableau

      Hi,

Is there any way to run a script on a remote server with inputs from Tableau and use the result data as source for the reports? Please let me know your comments/inputs about this.

      Regards, Ram

          Hey Rama -

No, not directly "out of the box", anyway. You could still do this, but it would require some extra work on your part outside of Tableau.

In Tableau, you might do something like use URL Actions or the JavaScript API to detect what values a user has selected in a viz and send those values to a web service:

Using a Tableau URL Action, you'd build up a query string like http://mywebservice?Parameter1=<TableauField>&Parameter2=<AnotherTableauField>

Your web service would grab the values in Parameter1 and Parameter2 and then "do work". That work would be to grab / filter / merge data however you need to, and drop the results in a table that Tableau is ALREADY connected to.

Using the JavaScript API would allow you to detect what things the user is interacting with and respond the same way - call a web service, telling it what values it should work with...

          Hope this helps.
