I've opened a support ticket to help get an answer to this question.
The short answer:
- Enterprise and Performance editions DO connect.
- Professional edition CAN connect, but you have to pay extra.
- Contact Manager and Group editions DO NOT connect
The long answer from Tableau Support:
It appears API integration is available for Salesforce editions Enterprise and Performance and are therefore able to connect with Tableau Desktop. Additionally, it appears customers may chose to purchase API Integration for an additional fee when using the Professional edition of Salesforce. Therefore, users who have purchased this capability will also be able to connect Tableau Desktop to Salesforce. I found this information on the Salesforce.com page located here: http://www.salesforce.com/crm/editions-pricing.jsp
Per the same documentation, Salesforce editions Contact Manager and Group do not appear to the ability to integrate with the Web Services API. Therefore, both of these editions will not be able to connect to Tableau Desktop.
I wonder if there is a workaround for connecting to Contact Manager and Group Salesforce editions. For example some app that can be installed in Salesforce.
Hi Michael. Thanks for the information. You say the connection is possible at professional level with extra payment. I wonder how this works. Do we get Professional edition and then pay extra for API integration?
I have actually just learned that at professioanl edition you can get API however it only allows data flow from an external platform into salesforce not vice versa. For both ways you need at least enterprise edition.
