Shawn Wallwork Aug 6, 2013 6:20 AM (in response to Egor Larin)Nothing personal, but I'm just not a fan of high-density bubble charts. They are almost impossible to decode and give little to no real insights. This is the viz we're talking about, right?
What's your take away from this chart? What does it even mean? And why are you calling it Mandala? Maybe there's a language difference here.

EDIT: OK a quick Google search of "Mandala" and I better understand what you're going for: Mandala - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia You were just producing a symbol not really a data viz. Right? Interesting.

Egor Larin Aug 7, 2013 12:46 AM (in response to Shawn Wallwork)Ok, Shawn. Let me try to explain this viz.
There are 1 mil. Russian media news for the time period of 3 months categorized by type and media name.
This chart is representative of how many each media source published news under specified categories. Big circles represent main source for each category.
Yes, the wiki link perfectly describes what i mean). So this is for meditation. I call it data art ^^ You can contemplate the art while deriving information. Dont you?
I'd be grateful if you describe your ideal viz.

5. Re: So many data. So hot)
Shawn Wallwork Aug 7, 2013 7:55 AM (in response to Egor Larin)Now that you confirm you're going for "Art", then fine. I don't think it's particularly good art, but I'm glad you like it. As to the "ideal viz", I suppose it's first and foremost a viz that tells a story about the data and doesn't require an additional explanation. There are lots of examples of good & bad vizzes out there. I personally have created many of both. I only hope the goods are starting to outnumber the bads.
Cheers,

Egor Larin Aug 7, 2013 9:28 AM (in response to Shawn Wallwork)Yo, man. I'm not trying to beat you in 'ideal viz' competition. Reading my viz requires some skills
An alternative way.
If you're in search of obvious in data art, then it's just not my style. But i got your point
Peace.
