Tableau Server 8.0 and Internet Explorer (IE) compatibility

    Adi Sutanto

If I use IE to open any views served by Tableau Server (TS) 8, it will encounter error: Session does not have sheet with sheetid.

I tried with IE 10 with and without Compatibility View, TS 8.0.0 and 8.0.1. This issue does not occur to TS 7.0.

I can replicate this problem by opening Tableau public gallery as well, e.g. the viz http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/medianincome/Dashboard1?:embed=yes&:toolbar=yes&:tabs=no mentioned in http://community.tableau.com/thread/113287

Activating the Compatibility View (just like the suggestion in http://community.tableau.com/thread/126385) sometimes will or will not solve this issue. But even if it solves the session issue, the report will have layout problem in compatibility view (sorry I don't have a screenshot to show).

In addition, in some cases, I also encountered another issue: infinite refresh with IE and TS 8 just like the one described in http://community.tableau.com/thread/115550

Due to all of these issues, Tableau Server 8.0 is not yet compatible with Internet Explorer (in my opinion). As a web developer, I understand that it is difficult to support old browsers like IE 6, 7, and 8. But Microsoft has been trying to improve web compatibility with IE 9 and 10.

May we wish Tableau to improve modern IE support?
