How to add a plus/minus error band to a chart?

    Simon Prégent

I am displaying an average temperature reading in a line (continuous) graph and would like to add a band that follows the contour of my data curve with the sensor error (data-point plus/minus 0.2 deg C) represented by the band.

Is this possible in Tableau? If so, how would I go about it.

          Hi Simon,

You could just create 2 additional calculated field measures as:

          [Temperature] -0.2

          and

          [Temperature] +0.2

Then if you have Tableau 7.0, you can add these two measures in the special Measure Values field to your view, flip them to a dual axis lined up with the [Temperature] measure, set them as AREA mark types, and make the area color for the negative white (or whatever your chart background is--so it looks invisible) and the area color for the +2 whatever color you like.

I believe you can also achieve the same effect by adding these new measures as reference lines, and filling below the +2 with the color you want, and filling below the -2 with white (or your background color.

          Hope this helps!
