As I recall, Union queries have always been "special" in Access - can't use the built-in designers, etc. I suspect that has something to do with the problem.
You have two choices (I just tested both):
- Create another ("second") query in Access and use it to consume the union query. Point Tableau at query "second" instead of "union".
- You can write Custom SQL inside Tableau itself to Union the two tables: SELECT f1 FROM t1 UNION ALL SELECT f1 FROM t2
