This is great, thanks! I hadn't used custom-built hierarchies before; this will also help me with a couple other features I'm building in. The expand/collapse controls are somewhat hidden the way Tableau presents them on a dashboard but it'll work perfectly for what I'm trying to do.
Tell us how this works out for you! I have to admit I haven't taken the time to experiment with this, but it does look like a great idea.
It does exactly what I need it to do, thanks again. I had originally built a parameter control but that had a major drawback in that hierarchies didn't persist as column headings, so it was hard for users to really understand the entire structure and where they were. As I mentioned before Tableau's expand/collapse button is a bit hidden but it's better than I thought: you can also expand/collapse by clicking or right-clicking on a column heading.
Still working on a couple subsequent fixes:
1. Getting all the levels of the hierarchy to show up on the top of the chart, instead of all on the top except the lowest level which is on the bottom.
2. Trying to figure out if I can build a Filter action off of the hierarchy controls so that I can have a marimekko chart and a regular bar chart (in other words, % vs actuals) in the same dashboard. That way the user can change hierarchy levels in one chart and it's updated in the other.
Hope I can knock these out today.
I implemented the same and it works but how can you implement nested sorting in this. I am stuck as it doesnt work.
