No ESRI shapes format are not supported by Tableau. But there is a way to extract the ESRI shapes data into Tableau readable format.
have a look into this-
Thanks for the answer. Looks promising!
However, quite new with Python here and it seems a simple copy-paste from the link in a py file just won't cut it before some indentation work.
Do you mind posting a dummy-proof script?
Yes it is possible.
For ESRI polygons, use ESRI and ET Wizards polygon -> point (use path order in Polygon mark type)
For ESRI multilines, use ESRI and ET Wizards polyline -> point (use path order in Line mark type)
You can also concatenate all of these.
Ensure you add X, Y (Data Management) tool
You can also use Richard Leeke's shapetotab tool.
Alteryx also provide a script to do the same.
I have the same issue when I convert from MapInfo to bring into Tableau. I use Joe Mako's instructions, available here:
http://joemako.tumblr.com/ - look under "Preprocess Shapefile for Tableau"
On the page there's a link to a script that takes the attribute data of the shapefile and formats it ready to bring into Tableau. You'll need to install Quantum GIS and Notepad++. I've used it countless times and it's foolproof.
Excellent work. Does this do polylines or just polygons?
So far it only works for polygon type. I could make it work for lines and points as well.
I'll make a new post about it, to see if there are additional questions/ideas.
If you could do multipolylines, that would be hugely beneficial; thanks!
