How to put Total and % of total in one sheet?

I tried many ways but just can't get it.

I want:

Dimension      Number of Records     % of Total of Number of Records

a                              1                                   1%

b                              2                                    2%

Thanks,

Alan

The embedded video below demonstrates one way of doing this

Gettin' a bit fancy Dimitri? FYI, your post generated a blank email message:

Mainly from boredom...

But it is also easier to record a video vs. describing steps, i.e.

versus

I sort of expected the email to contain a picture or placeholder of some sort to indicate the video. I'll know for next time to include some obvious dull comment.

I hear ya'! The insert picture function has definitely saved lots of typing, (and misunderstandings). Hadn't really played much with videos, I'll have to take a look. I must say all the videos Joe did a year ago are an invaluable resource, too bad he stopped making them. Have a good evening.

Hi,

Just jumping to this thread... I was trying to use the data to create a stacked bar chart using the above approach.

Managed to get double axes but it seems that the data values (the actual number and the %) then ends up overlapping each other.

Currently, I can only have the % value set to "display when selected" to have it display as shown -- I would like to have the data values to be shown in 2 lines within each stack.

Cheers

Em, can you post a workbook with this problem? It would be easier to figure out a solution.

Hi Dimitri,

One thing to keep in mind with videos is that some organizations (like mine) block videos from Vimeo, YouTube, etc. All I see of your solution is whitespace, so when there's just the video I'm out of luck. I'd suggest video plus packaged workbook.

What SMMC doesn't want you watching videos on company time? That's a bit conservative. Seems like there would be lots of great training videos out there for hospitals.

You're right, there are lots of great training videos, and lots of videos with old/outdated information, and even more videos on YouTube/Vimeo/etc. that have nothing to do with working in a hospital. Given that situation, limited resources to curate which videos are worthwhile, and limited bandwidth, the services are blocked except in specific situations.

Hi Dimitri,

What happens if you have 3 measure values? How do I compute the % of total for the 3 measures?

• 11. Re: How to put Total and % of total in one sheet?

I hear you, Johathan, but sometimes giving a completed workbook is not much help as it is not obvious how I got there. I will either have to (and did on occasion) write a tutorial, or record a video, which is sometimes easier, quicker and does a better job at explaining the issue.

The solution here should be videos embedded into posts, just like TabPub vizes and images. That way blocked YouTubes (no pun intended) will no longer be a problem. I hope Tableau will fix this - here is an idea for an Idea!

BTW, my company also blocked YouTube until it started using it for its own marketing. Try resolving that pickle as a company CEO!

Alan, do you want to calculate what % the 185 (FIRST ASSIGNED) is of the 185+2+111 total, and do the same for the other two? If yes, then, because the total involves three different measures, the approach is different compared to doing it for just one measure.

• 13. Re: How to put Total and % of total in one sheet?

Yes thats correct Dimitri, thats what I want to do.

In this case the easiest thing to do is to use a custom calculation with the formula like:

SUM([Profit])/(SUM([Marketing]) + SUM([Profit]) + SUM([Sales]))

It doesn't make any sense for this data, but illustrates the concept. I also attached a workbook.
