I want to select a location from a drop down menu and be able to see all the surrounding locations based on a radius of my choice. Is this possible?

Should be able to - calculations concerning the equation of a circle and if statements to see if the locations are within those xy/latlongs

I think this request might be similar to the series of blog posts Richard Leeke did on Clear and Simply?

Credit where it's due - I just adapted the approach Robert Mundigl had used in his earlier posts on the same topic on Clearly and Simply.

You might also want to look at the workbook I did for exploring New Zealand Earthquakes (which I did before the devastating quake that has just hit us).  That extends the technique to allow you to select a location from one list and use that to find nearby entries from another list (in this case I'm finding all the earthquakes within X kms of a given Post Code).

Much thanks for the help. Used these references as a guide. Built the book looks great!  However, when I right click on the map to view the data it gives me an error message(see below). Did I do something wrong during the process???

Error Message:

Database error 0x80040E14: Expression too complex in query expression '((['Northeast#Jared (2)\$'].[Address] = '208 Route 81/PO Box 626') AND ((['Northeast#Jared (2)\$'].[Company Name] = 'Killingworth Animal Hospital') AND ((['Northeast#Jared (2)\$'].[Latitude] = Val(41.353229200000001)) AND ((IIF((['Northeast#Jared (2)\$'].[Com'.

An unexpected error occurred. The "Show Data" dialog can not be displayed.

Looks to me as if your data source is an Excel worksheet - that is a common error from the JET engine when you start doing slightly tricky stuff.  Have you tried using a data extract?  That should fix it.

Question? I have multple locations in different states and cities with the same name. I am using a parameter to choose the location name and place on map. The problem is Tableau groups the locations with the same name and becasue of this doesnt know which location to choose. Is there a way around this? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Create a unique name via calculation: [location]+[city]  ?

• ###### 8. Re: Radius Mapping By Location

I thought of that but some locations have the same city name because the locations are named after the city.  For instance, theres a location in the city Collinsville but there are two or three. Collinsville, NC; Collinsville, FL, Collinsville, Oh; etc.

location + city + state?

If you post a workbook that could help us.
