The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines a cult as "a small religious group that is not part of a larger and more accepted religion and that has beliefs regarded by many people as extreme or dangerous." While that definition sounds almost negative, I have a much more positive definition of cult - a cult is a group that has extreme belief and reverence for something or someone.

I read somewhere that Tableau users love the Tableau product so much that there is almost a cult-like reverence for the product. I know of only one other company whose users love that company as much - that would be Apple. I am not exactly sure what gives a company a cult-like following, but if I were forced to write down a few characteristics of these companies or organizations I would say the following:

- easy to use

- trustworthy

- elegant and beautiful

- unconventional

- focus on different types of users or customers

- charismatic leader

I love the Tableau product as much as I love my Apple products. I don't know of any other companies that have such a following among users and customers.
