Tableau Sever 2018.2 unable to Backup

    Michael Wedekindt

      Hi,

currently I face to the problem that TS interrupts the Backup process at ~84% The Logs are as well not so clear what the problem could be

      TS Version: Tableau Server-Version: 2018.2.0 (20182.18.0627.2230) 64-Bit Windows

I started the back up as admin with this command

tsm maintainence backup -d --file Server.tsbak

Then I got this result as shown in the screenshot (In german)

In the Log File I found only these two exceptions.

It looks like the it relates to this line in the log "..backup_staging\filestore_0.20182.18.0627.2230 is not a directory.."

How can I change it or what I have to do that I can perform the back up?

      Thanks for help.

      Best Regards

      Michael

I am currently at Tableau Server 2018.2.3 and the backup ran for the first few days and fails now.

I think our issued are different- see my log below:

Job id is '12', timeout is 1440 minutes. 7% - Starting the Active Repository instance. 15% - Waiting for the Active Repository to start. Just got off the phone with Tableau- our issue is temp solved -using different acct to do the backup as previous AD acct stopped working.

                Created another Tableau support case:

Change that.. more problems with Backup running on Tableau Prod and Dev server  in the past few days.

One minute it complains about the directory, the next about it cannot flatten license file service.

Then today in our sandbox instance we get "Job Failed Job failed to complete. Type: GenerateBackupJob, ID: 103"

                in red across GUI TSM.

Avoid Tableau server version 2018.2.3 like the plague; our Prod instance crashed this weekend.

Attempting to follow their repair and permissions, and registry edits for Tableau Service acct.

And turns out 2018.2.0 thru 2018.2.3 was "soft pulled" from Tableau.com and not recommended but no one told us this last week!

tsm File Paths - Tableau  as this say default backup dir is C:\ProgramData\Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\files\backups

I attempted changing the backup Dir to an alternate directory in Development and it didn't work until version 2018.3.2 and 2018.3.3 for me

                    tsm configuration set -k basefilepath.backuprestore -v "<drive>:\new\directory\path"

When I have had backup issues, it was typically disk space.  Either disk space on the TSM server, or on the primary repository server.  Even if we set up a backup location to another drive, the operational drive of both of these servers needs enough space to duplicate the repository, and the TSM server also needs space to duplicate the filestore/extracts.  We were able to track it down by carefully watching disk throughout the backup process.  Our normal server monitoring never caught the disk space issue because tableau would run out of space, fail, then clean up the disk usage too quickly.

                              Hi Michael,

Try change the Path and execute backup again.

                              tsm configuration set -k basefilepath.backuprestore -v "<drive>:\new\directory\path"

After you change a default file location you need to do the following:

                              1. Apply pending changes:tsm pending-changes apply
                              2. Stop Tableau Server:tsm stop
                              3. Restart the TSM Controller:net stop tabadmincontroller_0net start tabadmincontroller_0
                              4. Wait several minutes for the controller to restart. You can confirm the controller has restarted with this command:tsm status -vWhen you can run that command and the Tableau Server Administration Controller is listed as 'running' the controller has restarted.
                              5. Start Tableau Server:tsm start

                              Bests

                              Veronica

Probably some changes on  directory permissions.

But I don't think this is the case. I am able to change the directory back to the original, without any errors in making backups.

Regarding the "correct answer". I didn't post the original question, so I can't mark it as correct. Sorry.
