# Creating word cloud from survey responses

I have a survey question where we have asked people given the option, where they would like to eat? Respondents were given 5 options, from first choice to fifth choice.

I am trying to create word cloud of the responses and see them as percentage. Currently I can easily create work cloud by pivoting all the choices with (First to 5th choices).

But I found a problem here, when I pivot in such a way, I am getting percentage as total number of choices (records) regardless of respondents.

For example, I am getting 10.95% for Keg in wordcloud where as if I just look at first choice, I get 16.02%.

Below is the short example:

Respondent First Choice Second Choice Third Choice 1 apple cherry grapefruit 2 banana apple NA 3 apple oranges cherry 4 apple cherry NA 5 apple banana NA Apple Tableau Pivot way 5/15:  40.00% If I want to know, how many people wanted apple: 5/5 100.00% As 100% of the people who filled the survey wanted apple I have also attached sample survey file. I would really appreciate if anyone could hep me to solve this calculation problem in Tableau

Hello Manil,

Based on at least my understanding of what you described, attached is a workbook that may solve your question.

I assumed the following:

The choice counts per respondent regardless of which choice it is (first, second, ...).

Choices are not double counted (for example, if The Keg is in multiple choices for the same respondent, it is only counted once).

As a validation check looking at your data, The Keg appears uniquely for 27 of 186 respondents.  This percentage of 27.96% matches the visualization.

I too pivoted the data as you described, and used the following calculation to derive the percentage:

({FIXED [Respondent ID], [Picks]: COUNTD([Picks])})

/

({ FIXED: COUNTD([Respondent ID])})

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Will
