# Determining when a customer is active or inactive

Hello,

I have sales data and need to determine when a customer is considered active or inactive from the point they became a new customer.  I would like the output to show orderIDs as rows with "month" as columns and "active" or "inactive" as the result.  We are working under the assumption that on average, each qty of 1 will last the customer 2 months. So if someone orders 1 box in Jan, they can be considered active for both Jan and Feb. I'm attaching a packaged workbook - tableau desktop version 10.0.19.  Thanks for your help in advance

Thanks Jim.  The goal is to determine who is still using our product.  They do not need to buy on a monthly basis because 1 box could last them two months.  so someone who bought 4 boxes will be considered active for 8 months from the date of purchase.  Trying to do some forecasting, and this additional criteria will help a lot.

See the attached

in a text table it returns this

the detail calculations are

fills in th 0 qty months

this just converts the qty to months supply at purchase

this is the remaining stock

and this puts a label based on the remaining stock

Jim, you're a genius!!  One more question: How do I get a count of the number of active and inactive customers by month?

Hello Jim, any luck with the count summary above?  Thanks.

Hello Jim,

I have a follow up to this that you helped me with before.  Should I open a new thread or can I add it here?  Thanks.

sorry - but to be honest I have not moved on it

but looking at what you were trying to do it seems like there is an anology to a solution I have on my public site

I think now - if faced with this I would use a data scaffold to pad the data so there is a record in the data set for every combination of account and date -

this is similar to the 2 date ptoblem

it is a HOW To example of how to do a date scaffold - not hard just a few steps - it counts the number of active accounts - is chart summary it returns this

Thanks Jim!  I will take a look at that.  My question is actually in regards to the work you already did.  I found a bug where once the customer comes back in, it is not correctly calculating the number of months they stay active based on their purchase.  I can attach the data.  Thanks again.

Sorry to bug you with this but I need help please.  The calculation of the Remaining Stock, which determines whether one is active or inactive is off.  Please see attached.  Thanks for all your help.
