# New Members

I wanted to calculate the distinct new members added in the year 2018. Have been working on this for a while, wasn't able to get it.

Kindly help

thank you in advance

• ###### 1. Re: New Members

Hi Manan,

Drag Date column to filter and select '2018' only.

• ###### 2. Re: New Members

Hello meenu,

i tried doing that, but that just gives me the distinct count of 2018 only. It doesn't help me get the new members added since the last years.

• ###### 3. Re: New Members

can you please share your data. i am using tableau 10.2 so not able to open your .twbx file.

• ###### 4. Re: New Members

If "Members" column contains "member id" then follow below approach:

1. Convert "Members" to discrete.

2. hiring_date = { FIXED [Members]: min(year([Date]))}

3. drag hiring_date  to filter and select '2018'.

4. drag "members" with countd function on dashboard.

Hi Manan,

Please create a calculated field as  {fixed Member : Max(year([Date])) } = {fixed Member : Min(year([Date])) } and drag this to filter and select True. sot that you get year wise new customers. It works for all the years not only for 2018.

P.S: If you want the old customers {fixed Member : Max(year([Date])) } <> {fixed Member : Min(year([Date])) }

Hello meenu,

i am beginner in tableau:

few things

1) it shows an error when i use hiring_date (saying it isn't defined, how shall i define it)

2) the member column contains the member numbers which are the member id itself

• ###### 7. Re: New Members

Hi Manan,

You have to create a calculated field with name " hiring_date" and  below calculation

{ FIXED [Members]: min(year([Date]))}

Hello Naveen,

I tried it, i am getting the correct value for 2018 but not for the rest.

Along with this could you please assist with few other things.

1) how do extract the value for the year 2018 from this table.

2) and how to automate this so that, whenever a new year begins, it takes the new members of that year.

Thanks

It worked.

thank you

Now how shall i go about if i want to automate it, so that it extracts and gives me the new members for every year rather than manually entering.

• ###### 10. Re: New Members

Hi Manan,

{Max(Year(Date)} will give max year in the data source whenever new year comes in to picture this calculation updated to new value

{max(year(date))}={ FIXED [Members]: min(year([Date]))}

and select True , so that only 2018 date it will give in ur scenario , whenever 2019 comes in to picture , then 2019 year new customers it will show

Hi manan,

Insted of putting date into filter ,just drag the year on column and it will give you the numbers for each year.

Please mark the answer that help you to solve the issue as correct to help others members what was the correct.

But this doesn't help me automate it for the upcoming years neither does it help to extract the value of new members in 2018..

Pls advice
