I have been helping a couple of CPG clients with IRI and Nielsen data, are you looking for anything specific? Happy to help...
Thanks for replying.
To answer your question, am I looking for anything specific, my short answer - inspiration.
As you know, IRI/Nielsen provide syndicated ('packaged') data, depending on your contract, you receive calculated time periods/geographies, and product hierarchies.
In my experience with Tableau, I've used it on more granular data sets.
The inspiration that I speak of is understanding how Tableau is used when joined with syndicated data.
For instance, do you connect Tableau direct to the syndicated soruces (via an ODBC driver) or do you use the syndicated providers' proprietary tools to extract the data sets?
If the latter, what level of detail are you pulling?
What types of reports have been generated using Tableau and IRI/Nielsen?
Again, in my past, I've leveraged the mapping functions of Tableau with retailers' store-level, UPC-level data to glean tremendous insights/opportunities.
In summary, if there's anything you can share, I'm basically a sponge right now.
Is there an updated answer/response to the main question above?
I'm interested as well....
I have been using Tableau with Nielsen data for a while now. I pull the data using NITRO instead of connecting to the databases; the reason for this is that the direct connection bypasses the custom dictionaries I have set up. I am able to pull large quantities of data at category, segment, brand and UPC levels and access these with Tableau.
Was there an answer to the question on how to connect to nielsen nitro?
specifically how do you connect Nielsen Nitro to Tableau?

Sorry, I haven't been on here for a while now. There are two ways to use NITRO data with Tableau; if you need your data dictionary definitions, the simple way is to pull the data using NITRO into Excel in "List Style" and then connect Tableau to the Excel file. The other way works if you don't need custom definitions. You can connect Tableau to the database directly as a Netezza database. If you look at the ODBC settings in Nielsen, it will show you the names of the database and the path to connect in Tableau.
Hi Charlie, can you speak more specifically about the Netezza database connection. Is it pretty straightforward? and what resource can we use to get that started.
