This is awesome! I took it a little further by involving a parameter so I could more specifically set pictures to match a list of choices not necessarily available in my "Filter Field".
I accomplished this by then creating a calculated field equal to the parameter, and placed that calculated field in the filter and detail cards. It took a little longer with this process as I then had to switch the parameter to input each picture in Steps 7-10 of your explanation. But this allowed me to assign a picture to "All", as well as some custom parameter items I've created that are not available choices in my data set.
Thank you so much for sharing this trick, it's very cool and will save me a lot of time in the future.
Shawn Wallwork this is a great post! It was exactly what I was looking for! I have a couple of additional questions.
1. Is there a way to auto refresh the image without closing and reopening the workbook if it changes? I was testing it out with two different images which I would name the same thing but it wouldn't pull the update unless I closed and reopened.
2. When I pull the image into the dashboard, it doesn't seem to pull in as big as it is on the worksheet. If I zoom, it messes up the settings on the worksheet. If I adjust a floating container the image just adjusts with it. I am wondering if there is an easier way to resize.
Thanks again for this post. It is a great trick!
Ultimately it is a very 'weird' experience to respond to something I posted 4 years ago! But I'll take a look this weekend and see if I can help.
Thanks Shawn. I imagine it is weird! I guess that is what happens when you post something really cool.
I appreciate it.

Thanks Shawn! Amazingly helpful (and clearly timeless)
This is a great technic but what if I don't want the Image Selection based on more Interactive mode like putting the field in Pages? (ver 10.1.1)
As I don't want the dashboard/story to be manual but more interactive.
Thank you so much Shawn Sir for ping me! Sorry for late reply.
First of all I'd like to thank you for such a nice work around. Its worth reading.
Coming to your question Deepak. As per my understanding you're trying to put any date field on page shelf and wants to see dynamic changes (here its images) just like .gif images or something like that. Correct me If I'm wrong.
Another approach why don't you replicate such scenario at your end and give a try and let us know If you get stuck somewhere.

This was exactly what I needed. Thank you so much for posting this!
Amazing post Shawn!
How would this change based on the selection from a bar chart in a different workbook instead of a filter?
It's really just a straight up Action Filter. Steps:
1. Take Product filter off the image worksheet
2. Create a bar chart using the Product field
3. Put both on a dashboard
4. Set-up a Dashboard Action Filter like this:
See 10.2 workbook attached.
Image Switches 10.2.twbx 830.3 KB
I noticed that this approach stacks pictures on top of the other. 'Leave the filter' worked best for me. But great way to put in images Shawn, thanks again!
Is it possible to do this without a discrete filter? For example, I'd like to have my image change based on the value of a field. If the value is 10 or greater, I'd like the background to be a specific image. Seems like the "only show when" option will only let me choose one value and not a range for 10 or greater. Any suggestions?
Thank you for this solution.
I am having some issues with using this.
I have created a custom calculation and wish to dynamically select an image (as you are) based on the result of this custom calculation.
Quite simply I have two variables. v1 and v2. If v1 is > v2 I want to display a green arrow up. if v2 > v1 I want to display a red arrow down.
I created a custom filter, COLOUR.
if v1 > v2 then 'Green' else 'Red' End.
I am using your method and got to step 8 where I selected my custom filter (COLOUR). Yet when I click on it, i get nothing under "Select a Value" - Step 9.
Even though COLOUR is dropped into "FIlters" and "Detail" and the current state is "GREEN". "GREEN" should show up under the list of values for step 9, however it is not.
