Could you please help me , where do you want to publish your workbook.
On Tableau Public or Tableau Online or your organisation has its own Tableau server.
Thank you for reaching out.
My organization does not have a Tableau server.
I figured out how to publish it to my Online account. I could then share the link so that others can view it.
I understand that there is another way to publish it, direct from the Desktop software. That is where I am stuck because I do not have a server address. Is there a workaround?
To share workbooks via Tableau online (online.tableau.com) you need to have purchased a paid subscription account on Tableau Online activated with the account credentials you are using. Do you have that? If you do not, then the error makes sense.
Tableau Public is a free service that one can use to share visualizations, but please be mindful that it is truly "public", in the sense that your workbook and data can be accessed by anyone.

To publish your workbook to a server location, you need to have access, as Srinidhi written, for publishing your workbook to Tableau Online you need to buy the license of the same and If you want to all world to see your data then register your self in Tableau Public and publish the same there only.
For publishing your workbook in your own server or Tableau online then use Yellow highlighted option and for Public you can select Blue option.
Make sure in case of Public everyone will be able to see your data.
In case your organisation is evaluating Tableau then you can take a trail of Tableau Server as well for 10 users for 14 days.
Rest is your call.
Thank you. I did not realize that the desktop version was not enough.
