What do you mean by:
I'm wondering if I can also use row level security with Active Directory in my dashboards.
And if yes, how can I automate this for my dashboards?
Can you provide more clarity and details about what your end goals are?

jos.houdel Oct 8, 2014 12:30 PM (in response to Matt Lutton)Hi,
Afcours, at the moment I have a big dashboard with sales information.
The different users login to my Tableau Server using Active Directory.
When user A logs in he should only see data for user A on the dasbhoard.
How can I join my Active Directory users to my dashboard and use row level security?
Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean; or what specific aspect of this you are struggling with.
First, you'll need to configure your server to use AD for authentication. Have you done that yet? This may help you figure that part out:
Adding Active Directory Domains | Tableau Software
From there, its just a matter of choosing a row level security model that works for you.

If you've already chosen local authentication, you'll have to revisit your Server configuration to change to AD:

I hope this helps. If not, I'd suggest you contact support@tableausoftware.com as they should be able to get on the phone or set up a screen share with you and walk you through the process.

Yes and one method is in the link you've read. I did a quick check since we use AD and I was able to select Users as well as Groups.

Yes since this is based on user ID, not Tableau Server role.

I want to restrict the entire data of a particular dashboard for my server admins (we have 3 server admins). Can you please send me a sample workbook on this?
We can't hide the workbook or dashboard views for server admin. At least i will restrict the data in this scenario.

Nandha

You would use regular row-level filtering like you would for anybody else. To filter you'll need to know their user name/ID or else have them in their own Group on the Tableau Server. You would use one of the User functions to filter the data accordingly.
