1. Re: Ask us anything about maps or spatial data in Tableau!
Catherine Tulley Feb 23, 2017 8:50 PM (in response to Kent Marten)Gah, so excited for this feature! *happy dance* So, this means we will definitely be able to connect to multiple geometry types, i.e., points/lines/polygons? Will there be an option to permanently import a geography type from a spatial file into Tableau's custom geocoding database, if desired?
Thanks!

hi Kent,
Great idea...and looking forward to the event!!
So I'm sure you know what I'm going to ask!...
A while back you mentioned making available a database of all the native mapping in Tableau Do you want to know what's built-in to the Tableau Geocoding database? . Is this still in the pipeline?
btw the Spatial File connector is just amazing!!

Thanks,

Great idea
Just registered and looking forward to the session on 3/1
I would like to understand better Custom mapping and merging custom maps with standard Tableau mapping
Also - you like to learn about best sources to download weather - more specitic major storm - historic data for tracking and mappint

1 of 1 people found this helpfulHi Catherine Tulley,
First things first. *virtual high-five*
A point of clarification, with spatial file support you will be able to connect to files that contain points or polygons. This first release of spatial support will not include lines or mixed-types. Lines we are working on right now, but support for mixed types is not immediately planned.
To your question - the short answer is no, there will not be a mechanism for importing a spatial file definition into the Tableau geocoding database as a custom geographic role. This is a feature we have discussed internally, but there's no time-frame set for when we will get to it.

Joshua Milligan Feb 24, 2017 9:32 AM (in response to Kent Marten)Hi Kent!
I'm loving the geographic and geospatial features that arrive with each new version of Tableau! Thank you! Any thoughts on allowing us to be able to do calculations with geometries and custom territories (such as this idea: https://community.tableau.com/ideas/7191)?
Best Regards,
Joshua

1 of 1 people found this helpfulHi Simon Runc,
The idea is still alive, but we just haven't committed the time and effort to make a public-facing, easy to maintain, downright delightful interface for anyone to see what Tableau geocoding supports. There is moderate interest, but not a pressing need. I'm hoping we can figure out a creative solution sooner than later.

2 of 2 people found this helpfulHey Shawn Wallwork,
Definitely map/spatial-data related. I am going to ask that you allow me to answer this on Monday -- I generally know why, but I want to confer with a couple of peers, to provide as much detail about why and hopefully offer some insight on how soon we might be able to enable this capability. Stay tuned.

Hey Jim Dehner,
Can I ask you to be more specific about what you want to know about? What exactly do you want to know about custom mapping and merging custom maps? Are you talking about background maps and map layers or interactive marks?
For sources of weather data in the United States, I would start by looking at data and services provided by NOAA:
WMS services: NOAA's National Weather Service
There are many historic weather datasets here: Datasets | Climate Data Online (CDO) | National Climatic Data Center (NCDC)
Folks in the community might have compiled a more thorough list of resources as well.

Thank you Joshua Milligan!
So you post an idea and ask a question about it on the same day? I like your style. I certainly have thoughts on exposing geometry fields in calculations to do more. I would love to see the community vote it up if it's something they would get value out of as well. I will say this, I like your idea a lot. We actually support some calculation expressions with geometry fields in 10.2 (IFNULL, ISNULL, etc.) and I can see the wide-appeal of the types of calculations your referring to, so hopefully we can make that happen one day soon.

Michael Hesser Feb 24, 2017 11:23 AM (in response to Kent Marten)I'll be waiting patiently to see if Tableau can bring Shawn Wallwork 's question to a close, as well (I think there was an idea posted about this?)
I'd *love* to be able to include the calculated lat/long values in other calculations.

Thanks Kent
I will certainly look into the sites you noted -
I have a client whose sales are effected by the number and severity of severe weather -
I am trying to analyze the relationship using their sales data, their customer POS, and the weather
Their interest is to trace the effect as deep into the local as reasonable - well lower than region or state level -
Does that draw a clearer picture
Jim
