Ah, my guess would be that it is a published data source. An excerpt from this link Publish a Data Source
Reverse engineering that statement leads me to believe you cannot hide fields in published sources.
If my other post does not solve the solution, create a copy of the published data source, hide the fields, re-publish (if that is what you want to do of course).
If you want to get rid of the fields completely you could always use Custom SQL. Maybe this could help? Can't delete measure

Thanks for checking in ... I tried using your suggestion above yesterday: Data, My Primary Data source (now an extract, but originally tied to a MS Sql Table), and then I clicked on the [Hide All Unused Fields] button (which just grayed it out), and then it ran ... but nothing seemed to change in my workbook, and was not prompted w/ any sort of message to save a new extract.
ADM is one of the dimensions I would have expected to have been hidden or removed from the 'new' extract after running a new extract as such
To restate .... just looking to simplify an overly busy workbook (initial data source had 75 fields, and was able to reduce that down to ~ 50, but even still my extract is nearly 1 Gig w/ 15 million rows). Now after exploring all the data we still have multiple fields we will not need to use ...
Hmmm... is ADM used in any of the worksheets or in a calculation within a used field?? If so - it may not be able to be hidden because it is "used".
And it would depend on your join conditions (ex, Inner joins could reduce number of records), but removing columns may not affect the number of rows that are retrieved. If the "primary" table you are using has 15 million records, unless you use the filter option on the extract, the workbook will have at least 15 million records.
A very cheeky way of "solving" the clutter on a workbook is to sort the dimension/measures pane by folder and add all the unused stuff to a specific folder. Certainly not the solution you are looking for... but it could potentially be less cluttered.

I was running into this as well.
The hide option was greyed out. Then I realized that I had the measures I wanted to hide were part a Workbook Crosstab. Once removed from them from the Crosstab, I was able to hide the measures.
