# Creating radius circles around points?

Guys, I have seen this done before online but would like a simple, step by step guide on how to generate them myself for a few points and then use the method to add more points or work with a data file of more points.

I have attached a very small Excel file with a few example points. If the result could show the points on a polygon map and 3 radius circles of, say, 10, 20 and 50 miles?

Can these circles be shaded so that the further out you guy the lighter the shade, and also let me know how to change the distance values if necessary?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Naresh,

There's nothing attached. However I would suggest reviewing this thread and building an example based off that would be a great place to start - Richard Leeke's New Version of (Concentric) Circles

Hi there I have attached the file now. I have tried to create my own thing but found the link a little difficult to follow to be honest as I'm a relatively new user of Tableau. The most advanced thing I've done so far, with help from here is create a dual axis map consisting of a heat map and separate points on top.

Regards,

Naresh

Unfortunately it's not a straight forward concept. I'm not aware of any step by step tutorials on the topic. Someone may come in here with better step by step advice for you, but I think the concentric circles post above is the best starting point.

If you try to walk through that guide, we may be able to help with specific questions you have as you go.

Thanks Tom, I will try that guide but, as mentioned earlier, I did have difficulty understanding it.

• ###### 5. Re: Creating radius circles around points?

Guys, I am still finding problems in trying to understand how to create these circles around points. Can anyone use my example data file to create radius circles around the points in the data so I am able to replicate it myself for more points and share the results with my team at work please?

I am basically looking at creating 2 or 3 circles around each point with different shades of colour to illustrate radial distance from the point for 10, 20 and 50 miles.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Naresh,

I'd suggest your best chance of actually getting help with this would be to create a Tableau Packaged Workbook connected to your datasource and show us how far you actually got replicating the original example. Or you could post in that thread and ask specific questions as it pertains to that workbook.

I need to understand what you've actually tried in order to help you. For example, have you taken the sample workbook and removed the underlying 'areas' so it's just the circles? I'd suggest that would be a good place to start as it will reduce the complexity of the workbook a lot.

Hi Tom, I have tried to replicate the guide shown by Alex Kerin in the link below:

I copied his files over and used my set of 6 locations but then got stuck where it said to open the table extract and point the new source at the xlsx file. I have attached my package workbook to show where I got up to.

Thanks in advance.

I think you're approaching this wrong. As per my previous post, you should take Richards example and simplify the example so it only shows the circles. Remove the series which populates the underlying polygons / areas by removing the first latitude pill on the rows shelf.

Once you do that, you'll see the workbook is much simpler - a point is represented using the Latitude and Longitude fields which are generated from the address, and then the 'Store Circle' field is calculating the radius.

Then in terms of rebuilding yourself, start by just plotting the lat/long to get the points on the map. If I look at your sample data, I don't see any lat/long data at all.

Thanks Tom, I think I have managed to reverse engineer this and changed the location names to random names for location information. Please have a look at my packaged workbook below and let me know if this could be improved in any way.

Also, the radius values used in the calculation are not immediately obvious what they refer to. Would you know if these refer to miles or some other value? Without a scale bar in Tableau I can't estimate any distance value.

Thanks in advance.

Nothing attached.

• ###### 11. Re: Creating radius circles around points?

Sorry, my mistake!

• ###### 12. Re: Creating radius circles around points?

Guys can anyone confirm what the radius values refer to in the Alex Kerin link?

The values of 0.5, 5 and 10 - are these km, miles or some other value? It would be useful to know seeing as Tableau doesn't incorporate a scale bar.

• ###### 13. Re: Creating radius circles around points?

This is what I've managed to produce so far but unsure if the radius values refer to miles or km or just a random number. Can anyone confirm please?

• ###### 14. Re: Creating radius circles around points?

Naresh,

I don't think the radius numbers are expressed in either KM or MI, I think they are just relying on the math of creating paths using lat/longs.
