A quick google/YouTube search will help
A couple links for you: http://onlinehelp.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/help.htm#actions_dashboards.html
Paint By Numbers: A Rough Guide to Tableau Dashboard Actions
but in essence, have you ever tried using the "Use as Filter" option on the dashboard?
If not, in the top ribbon go to Dashboard > Actions > Add Action > Filter and then configure from there. and the requirement about "resetting" the filter after they click off is in the "Target Sheet" section :

Josh Delekta Nov 15, 2016 9:51 AM (in response to Matthew Risley)Thanks Matt. I'll give the links another look but I've done my fair share of research (hence why I posted here) and can't get the visualization to filter itself on selection. I haven't had any issues having it filter other elements on the dashboard.

Josh Delekta Nov 15, 2016 10:29 AM (in response to Shevata Shanmugam)Shevata,
Please see screen shot below. I can mock up a workbook if necessary. I have placed a yellow circle around the "slice" of the area chart I have selected. The worksheet below with the green square around it filters as expected. I click on a slice and the worksheet below updates. However, I'm trying to figure out how to program and action that would, upon selection, show only that selection in the area chart and the axis would update accordingly. If I click out it would go back to the main view. Any thoughts? Thank you for your help!

Josh Delekta Nov 15, 2016 1:59 PM (in response to Shevata Shanmugam)Hello,
So I'm almost there. I've attached a sample workbook. When I select Greg's (or anyone's) allocation on the chart it filters as expected, except I'd like to be able to seethe whole allocation for every week, not just the one week, any thoughts? Thank you!

Thank you! This worked perfectly. I appreciate the explanation. One more question that I'm hoping you might be able to assist me with:
Can you set a dynamic axis range for the chart? I'd like the area chart to fill the entire view. I highlighted the area in yellow below. I know how to manually select dates to give that appearance but I would be looking for a way to set a dynamic range like you would if you dropped the date dimension in the filter area and select "Last 4 weeks". Any thoughts? Thank you!
