    Unattended Installs of Tableau Server

    Kitty Chou

We are excited to announce that we now support unattended installs and upgrades of Tableau Server as part of Tableau 10.1 Beta 2.  No more sitting at your computer manually clicking through the Tableau Server install wizard; you can simply provide the configuration, licensing, and registration information specific to your installation in a script and off you go.  Grab a cup of coffee and come back to a newly installed and running Tableau Server.

Check out the online documentation and samples on GitHub to give everything a try, and let us know your thoughts.

Here's what shipping for the 10.1 release:

      Installer Flags Documentation

We have updated and added new server installer flags for performing unattended installs and upgrades.  Most of these were already part of the product and we are just making them officially supported now.  Two new installer flags that we introduced in 10.1:

      • /ACCEPTEULA:  This is a required installer flag when doing a /SILENT or /VERYSILENT installation of upgrade of Tableau Server.  Including this parameter means that you have read and accept the Tableau End User License Agreement (EULA).
      • /CUSTOMCONFIG: Specify the location of a custom configuration file (.YML) for your installation of Tableau Server.  This values in this configuration file will override the Tableau Server default configuration for your installation.

See Automated Unattended Installation of Tableau Server for more information on the workflow and the full list of installer flags.

      Sample Installer Script

To help you get started, we have provided a sample Python script on GitHub which supports both installing and upgrading Tableau Server silently.  The repository also contains some example input files for use with the sample script.  Although we have elected to use Python, you should be able to use any language you would like to script your own automated Tableau Server install.

      Sample Cloud Formation template

For those of you who are interested in deploying to AWS, we have also include a sample Cloud Formation template that will get you up and running in a jiffy.  Simply follow the instructions provided in GitHub to deploy Tableau Server to AWS.

Remember, you will need the latest version of the Tableau 10.1 beta to try this out.  Go to http://beta.tableau.com and download it now!  Not yet signed up for beta? Visit http://tableau.com/getbeta to join in the fun.

Please let us know your feedback (any and all) so we can continue to improve this feature. Also, we're always interested to hear what you think we should do next.
