1. Re: Cross Database Join in Tableau 10.0
Pawan Kumar Aug 29, 2016 6:54 PM (in response to Akriti Lal)2 of 2 people found this helpfulSo are we done with "Blend" once and for all ? What i want to ask is , if anyone can confirm , After Tableau 10.0 there is no feature called as "Blend" as Tableau can create "Join" across all Databases .
Is that a correct statement ?

Manideep Bhattacharyya Aug 29, 2016 7:14 PM (in response to Pawan Kumar)1 of 1 people found this helpfulDear Pawan - This won't be correct statement, as blend works after aggregation, this is still a very powerful feature offering of Tableau and this would required in case two data set is not at the same grain.
Thanks - Manideep

Akriti Lal Aug 29, 2016 7:24 PM (in response to Manideep Bhattacharyya)2 of 2 people found this helpfulThanks Manideep for your input. Can you elaborate on "if two data set is not at the same grain" or give an example of such a data .
So does that mean , we will be adding the two data sources in Tableau 10.0 , and if a Join is possible it will show me the Join options else it will just get connected and we will have the option to "Edit Relationship" as we used to do in Blend earlier ?

Manideep Bhattacharyya Aug 29, 2016 8:46 PM (in response to Akriti Lal)2 of 2 people found this helpfulHello - Let's take the following two Data Set are in different Grain. First one is Sales data at Product Level and Daily and another Target data is at Country level and Monthly. Now if in one viz. we have to depit both in a bullet chart, then Blending comes preety handy and useful.
Thanks,
Manideep

Akriti Lal Sep 6, 2016 2:05 PM (in response to lakshminarayana.m)1 of 1 people found this helpfulYes , you need to connect to the first table in the first oracle database and then add the second table from the second oracle database and define the join condition - the common column based on which tables can be joined. Please try out and let me know if you face any issue.
Thanks

lakshminarayana.m Sep 8, 2016 8:24 AM (in response to Akriti Lal)It worked. Earlier i was not able to join because the data types on the join columns in not same ...one is decimal and other one is whole number..but when i changed the type to string using To_Char I was able to join. Just stating so if come across this issue this will be helpful.
Thank again Akriti.

lakshminarayana.m Sep 8, 2016 8:35 AM (in response to Akriti Lal)Akriti,
This might not be related to the above post but when I doing cross data join I'm getting error up saying unable to materialize temporary table/ Unable to create extract.
I looked up on tableau help. Link below:
Error "Unable to materialize temporary table" Joining Data Sources | Tableau Software
Not sure how to resolve this. I'm not seeing any antivirus on my machine. Any thoughts?
The reason I want to cross data join is because the calculations will be easy to bring back the data I need. For example in DSource A I've counts and in DSource B I've a flag to filter on to get the counts from Data source A. If data blended, it is creating a big/crazy workaround unless there is an easy way to do this?
My calculation should be something like this. If DS(B).column = "Yes' then DS(A).counts ( this is not working if data blended)
Easy way i know is doing cross data join but it is not creating an extract.
Thank you!

Akriti Lal Sep 8, 2016 10:06 AM (in response to lakshminarayana.m)Join approach is fine . I do not have two oracle databases , but when i do a cross database join between table in SQL Server Database and MS Excel , i am able to create Extract without any issue ( see below ) . I do not think you should be facing any issue , are you doing anything different or it could be some data that could be causing error . you would need to provide some additional info for me to further look into it.

lakshminarayana.m Sep 8, 2016 10:52 AM (in response to Akriti Lal)Yup. I'm doing the same way. Probably with the data I think.I just created an extract as a new data source (data blended)on the Table that is giving me the issue ..then it is has no issues creating extract alone..but when doing cross data with the primary source it is throwing me that error..Unable to materialize temporary table
Attached the issue I'm getting. I'll continue to look into why it is causing the data issue. Anything I find out will share.

Kind regards,

Akriti Lal Oct 5, 2016 10:12 PM (in response to victor.sirinopakul)I have not tried this out, but i believe You will have to upgrade Tableau Server to 10 for all features to be available and cross database joins to work as expected.

3 of 3 people found this helpfulYou can't join with published datasources but if you are logged into Server just for user functions then it will still work.
