    Formatting Date Time

    Stephen Lynch

I have a spreadsheet that contains a date/time. In the XLS sheet view the format is 08/08/2016 17:29:00. When imported into Tableau it does not recognise it as a date/time. Its treats it as a string and looks like this in Tableau: 08 Aug 2016 5:29 pm. So I have a few questions if you don't mind

      • Firstly, why doesnt Tableau recognise the date format in the first place? Is this not a common format that Tableau should detect?
      • Since Tableau doesn't recognise it as a date/time, (and changes to NULL when I attempt to change it), why does the string format change the format, (e.g. mm to mmm, 24 hr to 12hr)
      • Lastly, what do I need to do to fix it!
        • My DATEPARSE attempts are not working.
          • DATEPARSE("dd mmm yyyy HH:mm 'a'",[Send Date])
          • DATEPARSE("dd mm yyyy hh:mm:ss 'a'",[Send Date])
          • DATEPARSE("dd mmm yyyy HH:mm:ss",[Send Date])
          • DATEPARSE("dd/mm/yyyy HH:mm:ss",[Send Date])

I'm stuck now and frustrated at the effort needed to format dates in Tableau

      Thank you in advance.
