Thanks for posting...No I didn't know the 'syntax' for this...but checking Formatting Dates and Times - ICU User Guide led me the answer (I'd never gone as far as a 5th 'M' before!!)
...very handy where screen-space it at a premium, and you want to show TimeSeries

Yes. I looked at the Supported Date Formats | Tableau Software page and strangely enough the "mmmmm" formatting option to get the first letter is not listed there. Just found it by chance while playing around with the various formatting options.
Its interesting. I was thinking having one letter of the month is bit confusing coz we're getting same letter like "J" for months june and july or "M" for march and may. If months are not in proper order then user might get confused.
It'll be more meaningful if we have some month indicator like number of that month.
See the screen shot.
I've done something like this. Is it correct or not?
I hope you get my point.

A month can be formatted in 5 different ways using Custom Format box in Tableau
Example: 1 Jan, 2016
Value Format Display
1 Jan, 2016 M 1
1 Jan, 2016 MM 01
1 Jan, 2016 MMM Jan
1 Jan, 2016 MMMM January
1 Jan, 2016 MMMMM J
Hope that helps
