      11:00 a.m. Welcome & Introductions

11:10 a.m. Presentation by Jasper Harris & Ashok Patro, BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina
Abstract: Senior Informatics Analyst and avid Tableau user Jasper Harris has teamed up with Senior VizTeam engineer Ashok Patro to discuss and demonstrate the various ways Tableau has been a catalyst for change at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC). The pair will demonstrate three successful Tableau applications to show how BCBSNC has moved beyond traditional reporting, using Tableau for operational intelligence and by leveraging Tableau Server for self-service data discovery.

11:40 a.m. Presentation by Shawanda Smith, Piedmont Healthcare
Abstract: Sepsis is one of highest causes of mortality at Piedmont Healthcare. Early identification and treatment of sepsis is critical to patient survival.  To support this early identification, Piedmont implemented a Best Practice Advisory (BPA) screening tool in the electronic health record (EHR) to trigger an alert when the patient presents with signs of sepsis.  The clinical protocol is to initiate the 3-hour and/or 6-hour treatment bundle identified by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign.

Piedmont Healthcare implemented the Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) recommendations for screening and treatment in phases. Phase one: Creating a system level sepsis core team; Phase 2: Implementing the SSC screening in the EHR and treatment bundles; and Phase 3: Tracking 3-hour bundle compliance, length of stay, and severe sepsis and septic shock mortality.

In the winter of 2015, we launched the sepsis dashboard with validated data metrics. The system now has a trustworthy dashboard from which process improvement initiatives can be identified. Through this dashboard, we have already made progress with appropriate screening, bundle compliance, and decreased mortality.
