Using a backup/restore won't work if you are trying to merge the two Tableau Servers into one.
So, when using the tabadmin commands exportsite and importsite/importsite_verified you must also have the same Schedules. If I remember correctly, your destination can have more Schedules than your source. You need to make sure you have the exact, same Schedules on your destination Server that you have on your source Server.
I played with this tabadmin command and here's my blog comments at the end of the testing: Exporting/Importing a Site - Part 5 - Elation
If you have additional questions please post them here as it will get "more eyeballs" viewing it, plus I haven't worked with the tabadmin command since writing that post so my memory is very hazy now on this subject.

3. Re: Multiple backup files
John Kuo Dec 28, 2015 12:58 PM (in response to mahendra.devu)Exporting from v8.1 and v8.2 and import to v9.1 or v9.2 will not work. I can confirm there's a software bug and Tableau's Dev. team is working on it. The fix should be packaged with the next maintenance release or the one after that.
So here's a proposed workaround: Republish content from v8.1 to v8.2 (this may be tedious, unfortunately). Make a backup of v8.2 (now with contents from v8.1), then restore it to v9.2.1.
Alternatively, you can import sites into v9.0.x, which does not suffer from the bug.
Hope this helps!
John

John Kuo You mention v9.2.1 (as a workaround) however it's not available yet

8. Re: Multiple backup files
John Kuo Dec 28, 2015 2:12 PM (in response to Jeff Strauss)Actually, I just found out there won't be a Tableau Server v9.2.1, we'll skip it and release v9.2.2 to keep in sync with Desktop versions.

Hello all, thank you for all your valuable answers.elow is what I did;I took a backup from 8.1 and imported the content to v 9.1.2; and since second backup file(from 8.2) will overwrite the existing 8.1 content, I am doing site by site imports of 8.2 content to 9.1.2. I did reach out to Tableau and they recommended the same.
While doing site imports though it was complainig about not able to import objects, and exits ungracefully, which I asked Tab suport to take a look at. According to them the mapping issues that it is talking about are stored in a csv file in the temp folder in Tableau install location, but since the import command exits before it completes we dont see the csv file in the location. Will keep you guys posted with what I hear form support.
Thank you
Manny
