Here's some info upon trying out a few different things.
- When attempting to edit permissions on a view within Tableau Server 9.0.x, I get the message ""You can't edit permissions for this view; permissions are determined by the containing workbook."
- What I found is that upon publishing the same workbook without "Show Sheets as Tabs", it allows editting of view permissions.
- Under actions (on the server menu for the workbook), there is a new option (or maybe it was there before) for hiding tabs on a workbook. Is this an option for you? This will in effect allow editting of view permissions and I'm guessing if you publish without tabs, then permissions stay in tact at the view level.
Thanks, Jeffrey. I did publish without 'show sheets as tabs' selected and I can definitely edit the individual view permissions on the server. Unfortunately if I edit view-specific permissions on the server, download my workbook to edit in Tableau Desktop and re-publish, all of my view level permissions are lost. There doesn't seem to be any option within Desktop to set this level of permissions, or to select to retain the view permissions that have been set on the server.
I may reach out to Tableau support directly, it's likely I'm missing something here.
What you're running into is a bug (in fact I was the one that filed it ) that has been fixed in version 9.0.4.
Please upgrade a test environment to confirm, but you should be good to go on the latest version.
Sorry about the inconvenience in the first couple 9.0.x versions, but you should be all set now.
Thanks, Matt! We just upgraded to 9.0.4 today and it has resolved my issue.
Awesome news! Thanks so much for following up.
Have a great weekend!
