Why use a linked server to run stored procedures?

Based on Tableau's 8.1 documentation, why do you have to use a linked server to access your stored procedure? Is it for performance/security/etc? http://kb.tableau.com/articles/knowledgebase/using-stored-procedures-functions

I was able to connect directly to a stored procedure on our MS SQL server and use openquery to execute a stored procedure as a datasource too. I've noticed some tableau dashboards take a bit longer to process and display intermittently but if I use the sql or execute the stored proc they run really fast.

      Warm Regards!
