# How can I keep the Sub total from averaging?

Hi,

I have two tabs in this work sheet, one is SUM(TIME) and AVG (TIME).  The first tab correctly shows the sub total WHEN I REMOVE Process Name from the Rows shelf.   BUT, on tab 2 (AVG (TIME), when I remove Process Name from the Rows shelf, the sub total averages the total.  B

How can I make the sub total, total the Process names, not average them when I remove the Process Name from the Rows shelf?

Thank you.

Joe:

As you are using the average on the values, the second tab averages the data. What do you want to show?

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.

In tab 1, if I remove PROCESS NAME from the ROW shelf, the Total remains 19.54 for PROCESS TYPE bk1.

In tab 2, the sub total is 19.54 for PROCESS TYPE bk1, The SAME as tab 1.  BUT if I remove PROCESS NAME from the ROW shelf, the Total changes to 9.770  for PROCESS TYPE bk1.  I want the total of: 19.54 to remain as is and not change to 9.770 when I remove the PROCESS NAME from the Rows shelf in tab 2.

Our original data is like tab 2.  We have to average many PROCESS NAMES so bk1 is an average already.  Tab 2 says for PROCESS TYPE bk1, the TOTAL is 19.54.  Which is correct.  BUT again, when I remove PROCESS NAME from the Row shelf the TOTAL of 19.54 changes to 9.770.

Any ideas?

Whya re you averaging the average in tab 2? I am unclear on that part. If its already in the form of your data, just sum them. No, yes, maybe?

Joe:

Got it and hope this helps... you need to use table calc as you only want to show the sum of averages.

Karunaker,

This works in this test data, but when I plugged it into my real data, not so much.  I was trying to not upload real data.  Let me try to cleanse it and send it up.

Thanks,

joe

That would be good to see some real data. It might just the way we are computing the table calculations

Hi,  I've posted the real data and tried the calc and it works!  But, if I remove PROCESS NAME from the Row it all changes and leaves me with 40.03.  None of the totals stay.

Great help so far.  Thank you.

Joe:

Move the process name to the detail shelf and select compute using ProcessName on the Show Max table calculation.

Attached workbook also and hope this helps.

It won't let me mark it "resolved".  I've seen it before...but can't find it in this thread.

No worries.  Looks like it was started as a discussion and not a question.
