I'll chime in here as well since I received the "maintenance" error message yesterday -- when I emailed this on to the decision makers in my organization, I was told everything was paid/up-to-date. So, I'm curious about this as well.
Maintenance is the yearly fee you pay (after the 1st year) for updates, access to tech support, etc.
Professional Services Help Desk is $$ you gave to Tableau to have a Tableau consultant available to help you with "development stuff". Typically, someone buys 10-20 hours and then has a person they can call when they need a push in the right direction on something and/or wants one of our people to build something for them as an example / proof-of-concept.
I'm not sure why I get the notice of an upcoming expiration if our fees are paid. Happened last year, as well. Confusing to Desktop end users. Oh well.
Russell, 1) When you say updates, do you mean upgrades to future Desktop versions?
2) Tech support is just a random call to Tableau to help us with technical issues in Tableau Desktop?
Yes to both.
Matthew, they trigger those one month before expire. Even after everything is 'paid up' it the process can take as much as 1-2 weeks to get registered. This is what my rep told me when I asked the same question. So those alerts should go away soon.
Thanks, Shawn, for addressing that. Appreciated.

The maintenance is expiring soon warning occurs 30 days before the maintenance expiration date is reached on the current product key being used on Tableau Desktop/Server. When you renew maintenance every year, the maintenance date on the product key is renewed on our licensing servers.
In order to manually refresh the maintenance date on a product key, you can follow the steps found in the following KB article: http://kb.tableausoftware.com/articles/knowledgebase/refreshing-product-key-maintenance-date
Hope this helps,
