Frank you are right; your client is wrong.
Let me know what else I can do to help you.
Hi Shawn, thanks for your reply. I do have one more question. In this case, is there anyway to realize such functionality in some indirect way? for example, I can set up a live connection bt tableau and Excel, using excel as input interface. But once I upload tableau application to public server, to manipulate the data in excel file would become another problem. Do you have a good solution for that? Thanks again.

Probably this is the case that your client mentioned to you regarding data entry in Tableau. It was developed by Ryan Robitaille, and it is accessible in his web site:
Other important point. In the very first sentence of your post you mentioned:
I have a client asking me to develop a Data analysis app with Tableau public. ...
I believe that Tableau Public does not allows live connection to the data source, neither update the data extract base on an schedule. This means that you need to manually update/refresh the extract and publish the dashboard again to Tableau Public server.
I hope this information helps you.
That is very helpful. Thanks a lot, Ramon.
I'm glad my answer is helpful to you.
Tableau is a reporting tool first and foremost. The fact that it cannot [easily] allow data to be altered at the source level is very important. You are right and the client is mistaken. Maybe they saw some other tool that looked similar to Tableau and confused the two, it happens. Just like when people see my classic VW station wagon and call it a Volvo. They are similar looking on the outside...from a distance...to the untrained eye...
