# MOLAP Cube: Create Calculations with Dimensions?

Good Afternoon,

When pulling from Excel with Tableau, you can create calculations with Dimensions and Measurements.  With a Cube it appears you cannot create calculations with Dimension.  Has anyone ran into this issue and how did you find a way around it?

Hi John,

While working with MOLAP cubes, you can create Calculated Members with dimensions.

A bit of MDX knowledge is required as a prerequisite

Can I used if statements?  Can measurements be included in the formula?

Thank you again.

I looked up MDX.  I am not familiar with this.  Is there a way other than MDX?

Thank you.

Another way is add the calculation in the cube itself (back end). I assume you don't have control on the cubes so you have to co-ordinate with your IT developers team.

Is there any way I can create a Dimension calculation without needing IT?

It is pretty difficult to advise you without knowing the exact requirement.

The major challenge with cubes are it will not support data extract creation, otherwise you could have post a packaged workbook with data and we could understand your data structure well.

Please try to explain your exact requirement, so we can at least try for similar MDX codes.

thanks

So the problems I am trying to fix is this:

Problem 1: I have a dimension, Metal Type, with 6 fields.  Example fields are Alloy and Carbon.  This dimension is associated with the measurement Tons.  I need to be able to show each of the 6 fields on a single report or slice and dice it.  With excel, I created a calculation to filter each Metal type and show all on a single report.

Problem 2:  If the dimension, Vendor, is Vendor A then use Consume Date else Ship Date for the measurement Tons.  I cannot create a If-Then-Else statement with dimensions.

I want the Tableau users, like myself, to be able to resolve these issues without using IT.  With Excel, I could use a calculated field.  With the Cube, dimensions are treated differently.  I should add, I open to alternative suggestions.  Meaning, if there is a non-Calculated way and IT does not need to be involved, I am all ears.
