# median formula even number of observations

Hello -

Using a data extract I'm calculating medians.  One tableau median doesn't match what SAS says the median is.  I have 342 cases.  In sequence, number 171 is 134500 and number 172 is 135000.  SAS looks at this data set and says the median is 134750 but tableau says the median is 134500.  What's going on?  And how can I get tableau to present the median as the average of the middle two numbers when the number of cases is an even number?

Thanks

Dan Stoll

Are you using an extract? If not, what is the query in the logs that provides the median?

Using an extract on Excel data of 1,2,3,4 results in a median of 2.5

Are you sure all rows are getting into Tableau?

Hello -

Looks like PEBCHC error (problem exists between chair and computer).  I had some bad data in there.  Thanks for your help.  And apologies for taking your time.

No problem, mainly because I'm stealing PEBCHC...
