How do I hit a cross-domain server with Tableau Desktop?

I have a reporting server that isn't local, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to connect to it to pull in tables. Someone had told me that Tableau can't do cross-domain access, but (while I'm limited in my IT background), I didn't think this to be true based on the multiple non-local connections Tableau allows.

My apologies on my ignorance of server structure and design, but do I need to be on the same network physically as the servers I'm hitting? or will VPN suffice?

EDIT: I should note that I'm using the server host name (xxx.x.xxx.x) and my server credentials, but to no avail. Still awaiting IT's response on if I'm missing something here...)
