1. Re: Any way to allow users to add a Refresh?
Dimitri.B May 19, 2013 6:44 PM (in response to Ernie Dale)The other user doesn't really need to "Add Full Refresh", you can schedule it yourself for once a day (for example) and the other user just has to go to tasks, select the right one and click "Run now" to execute it ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way to allow users to just run a task (or assign a schedule), without giving them full system (or site) admin privileges.
One convoluted way around this would be to take this data refresh business off Tableau Server, i.e. Tableau Server connects live to some table in a database, but the table is a small aggregated summary of the data that can be refreshed by any number of users, in other words that table plays the role of Tableau extract. This way your DBAs can use a (hopefully) richer and more granular permissions functionality of a database engine to just allow modification of that table and nothing else. Oracle and SQL Server certainly allow more control over what is and isn't allowed, compared to Tableau Server.

Mark Jackson May 19, 2013 8:37 PM (in response to Ernie Dale)If you make them a data source editor, they should be able to right click on the source from within desktop v8 and force an extract refresh on the server.

Wouldn't that require re-publishing the workbook? Or do you mean the Tableau's own Data Server data sources? I am not sure it would work even in that case, without re-publishing from desktop to Server.

Mark Jackson May 20, 2013 6:30 AM (in response to Dimitri.B)I'm referring to extracts on Tableau Data Server. See the online help here: http://onlinehelp.tableausoftware.com/current/pro/online/en-us/help.htm#extracting_push.html

mark.welsh May 16, 2017 1:11 PM (in response to Ernie Dale)I have a similar question: Can a Server Interactor refresh an extract at any time? I want the user to go and make their changes in the source application then refresh Tableau Server workbook and see changes right away.
