1. Re: How can I apply a filter to a group of worksheets but not all?

Assuming you are within dashboards, the only way to do so now is via Actions. In version 8 you will be able to specify which worksheets a filter will apply to.
Hope this helps,

Cristina Palo Nov 15, 2012 6:09 AM (in response to Andy Piper)Thanks Andy...I search in the website to learn more about actions but can't find a tutorial on it. I am pretty new to Tableau and am struggling a bit
Can you point me to a tutorial/article about Actions...I am familiar with Filters but as you said I am working with Three dashboards....each dashboard has three workbooks. I need each dashboard to have the same filters on for the 3 workbooks associate with it, but not necessarily the same filters on Dashboard 2 and 3.
Right now I have three filter in each dashboard (one for each workbook) and the user needs to click 3 times in order to get correct view. Not ideal as it takes a lot of space and it can cause human error on missing one filter
Can you help?
Thanks,
Cristina

3. Re: How can I apply a filter to a group of worksheets but not all?
Cristina Palo Nov 15, 2012 12:24 PM (in response to Cristina Palo)Andy...I learned a bit more about actions and it does not seem to work for this purpuse since the user need to click on the actual table or chart to filter and it cannot be multiple choices
When is Tableau 8 coming out?

The Beta is out right now. I suspect sometime early next year (mid-to-late first quarter), but don't hold me to it - just a guess from a non-Tableau employee.

Your other option besides Actions is Parameters. They're even faster and easier to manage, I find.
At a VERY high level: set up a parameter to be your filter (with all values your existing field), then set up a calculated field that is simply [parameter]=[existing field]. Then on every sheet that you want the parameter-filter to be applied, put that calculated field in your Filters, filtered to only True values.
Only the sheets you have put this Filter in will be filtered when you make selections with the Parameters.
I described the process in depth here, if it helps: http://community.tableau.com/message/191764#191764
Or, if you attach a sample workbook, I'd be happy to show you.
Hope this helps!
