Try not to have any other fields than Longitude and Latitude in either the rows or columns section, If you have other fields, you can move the dimension to the Marks section where you can represent them as a shape, color, pie chart etc.

Shawn Wallwork Oct 16, 2012 7:15 PM (in response to Cleveland Sasser)Cleveland, you data isn't in the best of shape, but it will produce a map:
You're missing a two lats, and because you're data has lots of nulls (blank cell is Excel) you may create some problems for yourself down the road. But like I said it does make a map. Make sure when you put the pills on the shelves you convert them to 'Dimensions'. I don't work in Public, so I don't know if that creates other issues. Good Luck.

Thanks for your answer although I still had problems. Shawn's suggestion to mark the Lat & Long as "dimension" resolved much. I do have some work to do on the data....Happy Eid next week I believe!

Thanks! Why the default for lat/long isn't dimension...? That helps and I'll clean up the file and have at it! Will let you know!

1 of 1 people found this helpfulChanging Latitude & Longitude to dimensions isn't the only way to do what you want. By default Tableau aggregates on measures, so if you put only the Latitude and Longitude fields in the viz and nothing else, they all get aggregated and you end up with a single dot.
You can uncheck Analysis > Aggregate Measures to tell Tableau to treat each record as a separate point but not distinguish them in any other way.
Or you can put a field on your viz that distinguishes the points. In this case, put Hospital on Level of Detail (or Label if you want your points labeled!) and then Tableau knows the points are different.

Shawn Wallwork Oct 17, 2012 4:42 PM (in response to Dan Cory)I stand corrected. Thanks for the lesson Dan, I'm always happy to learn -- Tableau has such depth, I'm always amazed.

Cleveland Sasser Oct 17, 2012 4:47 PM (in response to Shawn Wallwork)Shawn,
You're so close to what I'm going for. Ideally I would have Tableau show the hospital, with income on tool tip, and the three zip codes in different colors, with age and income marked inside map. I'm breaking for dinner, back at it later. Thanks for your help and interest.

"You're so close..." is candy to us forum folk ears! (Thanks for that.)
But there are some clarifications need:
- I would have Tableau show the hospital... (which hospital?)
- "with income on tool tip" (?)
- three zip codes in different colors (??)
- age and income marked inside map (???)

Cleveland Sasser Oct 17, 2012 6:25 PM (in response to Shawn Wallwork)Shawn,
Soup was good, thanks for asking.
clarifications:
Thirteen hospitals with a little individual colored dot
Hoover cursor over hospital for income and %change.
color three zips using hospital color (warm to cool gradient for income differences--I'm dreaming)
Print age and income numbers in zip boundary--aesthetically eww- but how else to show figures?
I'll send you and Dan and Fahkzan a link to the finished product.
