In order to add the slicer, you should be able to drag and drop the date field onto the Filters shelf which then presents the option to define the filter type. Select 'Range of Dates' and click OK to finish creating the filter. With the filter created, you should be able to right click and say 'Show Quick Filter' to see the filter control.
Once created within one of the views, you should be able to display this filter on your dashboard. Good luck!
Thanks for the reply.
Whilst I understand how to put the quickfilter on the dashboard what I dont understand is how I can get the parameters of the date range filter to drive the contents of the dashboard.
For example if I select the date range 9th to 16th Spetember how do I ensure that the dashboard only displays the data within the set date range and then adjusts as I adjust those date ranges.

Once you have created the range filter on the dashboard, you can right-click and chose 'Make Global' which will ensure that the filter is applied to all the views on the dashboard.
Hope it helps.
Adding Timeline kind of filter will add lot of value. It should have features like -
1. I should be able to select Period Types (Year, Quarter, Month or Week)
2. It should be multi selection -
3. Tableau should be able to give me option for adding what time line control based on all the Date fields available.
