Jerome Bouton Mar 13, 2012 12:07 PM (in response to Jan R. Tanner)Hello Jan,
I know that the beginning of the conversation is a bit far from now, but may it still worth the pain, so...
You can do it with a bit of calculations, for instance :
The original Data:
The final result:
(the name of the month are in french sorry for that)
You can see in bold the totals at the top of the data columns and left of Lines.
How is it done ?
You have to create two calculated fields (one per kind of Total), then you will put them on column and row shelves.
As they are numeric values, you then will have to turn them to discrete values (this way they will be seens as textual numbers and not as axis).First step : calculated fields
First step : calculated fields
The other field
Second Step : put the fields on shelves and you turn them to discrete values:
Final Result :
Hope it helps...

Jan R. Tanner Mar 15, 2012 9:17 AM (in response to Jerome Bouton)Jerome,
I must complement you on this solution. It is very innovative. Thank you. I would still want Tableau to implement this fix as a simple formatting option. I haven't tried your solution yet. What happens when a drill down hierarchy is used? Should all the available fields be listed even though they are not displayed?
By the way, what tool did you use in creating your reply? The presentation of the tables and dialog boxes is very crisp and clean. Again my compliments.

Jerome Bouton Mar 15, 2012 11:00 AM (in response to Jan R. Tanner)Hi, Jan
I completly agree with you that this functionnality should exists natively.
It could be far more easy to use than this calculated field... Anyway, may be in the future ;-)
To respond to your first question about drilling, I tested it below, it works. At least for a DATE field!
I haven't had time to test it with a custom hierarchy. It could be good to test it!
If you to try the file I attached them (both Data and twbx at the end of this reply.
To respond to your second question, I use 'Snagit' from Techsmith.
So, here is the drilling :
(I was using my product in French Language during the screens capture, so for the names of the Date Functions are different from yours :
ANNEE stands for YEAR, TRIMESTRE stands for QUARTER, MOIS for MONTH and JOURS for DAYS.Sorry for that )
If you wanna do some other tests, you will find the XLS file and the Twbx below.
Have fun ;-)

Leigh Fonseca Aug 20, 2012 10:44 AM (in response to Jerome Bouton)Thanks, Jerome. I just came across this and when adding this with http://community.tableau.com/thread/113577 I'm able to move totals to the left of a detail display and include subtotals. I so appreciate the forums!
