# How to calculate percentile values  say ( 90 percentile or 95 percentile) of a column

Say i have sale of 2000 Categories and I want to know the 95 percentile sales value as input to more calculations

You can use a custom table calculation like the one discussed at: http://www.tableausoftware.com/tcrl/table-calculation%3A-quantile

It sure would be nice if as Richard suggests if there was a QUANTILE() and/or WINDOW_QUANTILE() functions available.

I pray for QUANTILE() and WINDOW_QUANTILE() functions.

+1 for each

I too wish for a quantile() function.

I really don't like how a table with subtotals and semi-transparent bars looks funky (numbers are bold, and bar transparency diminishes with each additional overlap of data for the subtotals only).

Considering how much percentiles are used in Healthcare, this is one of our biggest let downs.

I totally agree with these comments.

There should be an easy method to include percentiles OUT of the BOX. Working with percentiles is a crucial data analysis taks, but the calcualtion behind it is massive if having huge data files.

We only can hope Tableau Software Development will come with something fancy soon.

+1 for quantile

Percentiles and quantiles would be terrific, even if they were in the Summary view. I'd love to be able to see something similar to the example used in Stephen Few's recent paper. (A GREAT article, by the way):

You can get just about any calculation you want in Tableau with table calculations. For an example like your image, see Re: Distribution Chart with Moments and Limits

Joe, thanks for your response. Can you please explain this further? What type of table calcs should I be looking at? Can you provide an easier to understand example than is contained in your linked post? Thanks.

Tableau provides a good resource on table calculations at:
