Good morning, afternoon, and evening! It's the last week of June, and summer's in full tilt, here in Seattle. The summer is always a great time with lots of activities taking place, and the Tableau Community is no exception! Let's take a look --

Did you watch the Tableau 10 Virtual User Group? If you missed it, you can still check it out here: Tableau 10 Virtual User Group on Livestream. It was a great event with a Pre-show hosted by three Tableau Ambassadors and User Group Leaders, Amber Smart, Christopher Scott, and Emily Kund. The main event went into a deep dive of the Tableau 10 features with the Tableau Developers - so much goodness, coming! This was also the kick off of the Tableau Torch and the Tableau Torch Viz Contest!

The Tableau Torch Viz Contest is definitely something you'll want to partake in. There are 5 opportunities to win a ticket to TC in Austin and create a Tableau viz using Tableau 10.

Congratulations to Ashish Chaudhari on receiving the "Questions for Breakfast!" badge - meaning that 25+ of his responses have been marked as correct. Ashish has been a member of the community since 2015, but has recently been getting really involved! Thank you for all the answers you've given to people to make them successful! We hope to continue seeing you in the community!

Muhammad Khan asked how to create a Pie Chart with two Measures. khalid norat stuck with it, and was able to help Muhammad answer his question by creating a calculated field which helped find the unemployed and employed candidates. I love finding this conversations where it really shows two people fully engaged, working to solve a problem together

Allen Gapara had a question about Automatically Select a parent by selecting a child earlier this month. Ivan Young suggested using a parameter instead of using a calculation or LOD expression. He created the workbook in version 9.2 to solve Allen's issue, but when Allen didn't have that version - Ivan gave detailed instructions on how to accomplish it. What a great community!

Top Voted Idea

This one has been on the top list a couple of weeks now. Created by Loic Grange back in 2012, received 12 up votes, giving it a grand total of 901 votes in favor of it.

Happy first day of summer to the northern hemisphere (and first day of winter to the southern)! The summer is shaping up to be busy one as usual, and this week is no exception! Let's take a look into what's up for this week and what happened last week. Here we go!

First things first, this week is the Tableau 10 Virtual User Group. Not sure what that is? Learn more about the hosts here and register here to watch the event live or see if there is an on-site viewing party in your area! This is going to be a fantastic event where you will get a deep dive into the Tableau 10 features, have the opportunity to win a pass to TC16, and ask questions of the Tableau Devs who have been working on the latest release. Feel free to ask your questions ahead of time here: Tableau 10 VTUG - Q+A or tweet out on the day of the event using #TableauVTUG.

How long have you been using Tableau? Let us know in this poll!

Have you seen this blog post (Best Practices for Designing Efficient Tableau Workbooks, the V10.0 edition | The Last Data Bender)  by Alan Eldridge? Alan put a lot of research and time into it - definitely recommend checking it out!

All entries for the Web Data Connector Hackathon should have been submitted at this point. Looking forward to seeing what the winning submission will be!

Congratulations to Tina Hauser who achieved the "I Know Stuff!" badge - meaning that 10 or more of her answers have been marked as correct. Tina has been a member of the community since 2014, but has recently become very active - taking on questions related to how to write calculations. Thanks for your contributions to the community, Tina, and we hope to continue seeing you!

This week, Vivek Nallapaneni (a brand new member of the community) asked how to find the Aggregate Top N measures per PlayerPaul Sherras took a stab at this using the Index function, but it wasn't quite what the outcome needed to be, as Ashish Chaudhari noted. Looks like Ivan Young came the closest to solving the issue by using several table calculations. Vivek, does this solve your question? If so, please mark it as correct!

Allen Gapara was having an issue with Automatically Select a parent by selecting a child where the numbers weren't filtering as expected. Ivan Young to the rescue again. He recreated the workbook using a parameter to help solve Allen's issue. Nice work, Ivan!

Top Voted Idea

This week's top voted idea with 10 votes was written by kettan back in 2013 (but has been updated a couple of times) - Hierarchy Filter. This would allow for multiple fields to be used in a filter to allow further filtering. I like this idea - up vote from me!

It's the middle of June in 2016 so that means it's Soccer time.  The Euro Cup 2016 and Copa America are both in full swing.   Do you have a favorite Tableau Soccer visualization?  Here are a few I am aware of:  Goal Scorers Over the AgesEfficiency of World Cup Players,  and here is even on created by Dan Mantena for this year's Copa to track standings and odds..  Argentina definitely is the odds on favorite.

Tableau Conference On Tour - London is going on this week as well.  Our Community engineer, Lénaïc is working at this year's Conference.  Be sure to stop by and say "Hi" to Lenny.

Have you ever attended or watched a Think Data Thursday presentation and thought to yourself that you'd like to share insights, tips, or just something interesting about using Tableau?  We are looking for presenters for upcoming Think Data Thursday's.  Now is your chance to share your knowledge.  Contact the Tableau Community team if you are interested.

Have you checked out the upcoming version of Tableau? Are you a small business that uses QuickBooks Online?  In Version 10 of Tableau, you will be able to connect directly to your data.  Check out more about this upcoming feature here .  And there is still time to check out the Beta of Version 10.

Congratulations to Ivan Young for achieving the Questions for Breakfast! badge this week.  This badge recognizes the fact that Ivan has 25 correctly marked answers in the community forums.  Additionally, we have three members that have recently received the Help Desk badge recognizing 5 correct answers.  Congratulations to Jason Harmer, msa s, and Tableau's own Adam Cogswell!

Michelle Barrineau posted a question asking for help to tweak the appearance of Bubble charts to make them look more interesting.  Simon Runc offered up the use of custom shapes as one possible solution. There is a great side discussion around presenting to Executiives with Toby Erkson.  Simon offered up a potential idea of tweaing the flat bubble shape slightly to allow for a more 3d look to the bubble and Michelle countered witha  modification to the "Ratings" shape inspired by the suggestion.   A great community post bringing together ideas around best practices, visualization communication and how to tweak Tableau just enough to get a desired result.

Allen Gapara created a question asking how to Automatically Select a parent by selecting a child. Ivan Young (our 25 correct marked badge achiever this week) provides a resolution utilizing a Parameter and a Table Calculation to return the desired value.  This thread had over 800 views last week assuring that Ivan's solution not only helped Allen but a lot of other users as well.  This is a great example to show the power of Table Calculations in Tableau.

Top Voted Idea

This weeks' top voted idea takes us back 3 years to a very popular request by kettan to create a Hierarchy Filter within Tableau.  This Idea gained another 12 votes this week with over 732 views.

Tracy Rodgers has posted a new article up spotlighting another of the amazing Tableau Ambassador, Joe Oppelt.  If you haven't read it yet take a read and learn about Joe's journey with Tableau.  If you are just starting your Journey with Tableau or you have been using it for years, Joe has a few words of advice that I am sure you will find helpful.

That's it for this week. Have a great week and keep analyzing.  Please send any comments, suggestions, or submissions for this digest to

Happy Monday everyone! It's been an exciting and hectic time here at Tableau as we gear up for our Tableau 10.0 launch. As such, let's start with something fun! Today on June 6th in 1933 the first "drive-in" theatre opened in Camden, New Jersey. Richard Hollingshead was the original inventor of the "Park-In Theatre" as the term "drive-in" didn't come around until later. Which reminds me of a fantastic blog on exploring IMDB data with Tableau: Tableau Tutorial: Exploring IMDb Top 250 movies with Tableau. With that, let's get on to the digest!

Only one week until we kick-off Tableau Conference on tour - London!

[London | Tableau Conference On Tour] 13-15 June 2016

We hope to see you there!

This Thursday, June 9th at 8am join Michelle Wallace for Think Data Thursday: Behind the Scenes with Tableau's Social Media Data - June 9th, 2016!

TC16 in Austin will come up sooner than you expect! Make sure to register so you don't get sold out!

A big "congrats!" and "thank you!" to Andrew Watson  & Carl Slifer, our two newest Community members to achieve the "Question Slayer" badge meaning 50 responses have been marked as the correct answer. Both Andrew and Carl are based out of the UK and have become wonderful resources within our Community. Thanks again for all the help!

Niko Suomi asked a question about reorganizing some data using a table calculation and filters. Bassem Khalil, and Sanjay Nimbark did what they could to help but were unable to find a proper solution. Maybe you can! Check out the thread: Table calculation \ filter problem.
