Holy Moley - I can't believe, it's the last week of February! This month really has flown by.

Recap of Events

This past Thursday, we had a fantastic Think Data Thursday with Michael Chen who presented TDT: Raiders of the Lost Postgres - February 19, 2015. If you missed it, there's a video and his powerpoint attached to the thread.

Recognition

Last week, Tableau kumar received the "Question Slayer" badge for 50 of his answers being marked as correct! He has been supplying answers and help to al ot of people in this community, and on Sunday he shared Creating Indian Fiscal Calendar in the Workbook & Calculation Library. Thank you for all your contributions!

Bill Lyons has recently achieved the "Questions for Breakfast!" badge, answering 25 threads correctly! Not to mention, he's got some fun profile pictures Thank you Bill for your continued efforts!

Two members received the "I Know Stuff!" badge - Mark Lake (a fairly new member to the community) and Yuriy Fal (who has also been steadily receiving the Helpful answer badges). We appreciate both of your work and hope to see more of it!

Most Talked About Thread

**This is characterized by the number of responses in a thread

Last week's thread by Erin Gehn Running Total Column :: Running Total Row Ratio generated 30 replies. Almost the entire thread is between Erin and Joe Oppelt over three or four days. They went back and forth between finding a calculation that would get the desired values and finding how to hide and get the view that Erin wanted and need. Ultimately, it was one of Joe's earlier responses that resolved the issue - though it looks like they're still trying to find a solution with the real data behind the scenes.

Top Viewed Thread

It probably won't be until after 9.0 releases that Prashant Sharma's New Features in Tableau 9+? is no longer the top viewed thread.

This thread, created by Jonathan Marcus - The Google Maps Embed API must be used in an iframe. back in March of 2014, also received quite a few views. Andrew Norris "reopened" it, by referencing and asking Richard Leeke about getting the map to appear in an iframe. Though Richard was not necessarily able to solve the issue for Andrew, he did discover a change in Public's connection (it is now a secure connection using https:) and provided a next troubleshooting tip.

Top Voted Idea

This idea, Apply Button - Close Drop-Down List was created just last week by Derek Mansell and received 9 votes - making it second to Dynamic parameters (only by 1 less vote).

Have a great week everyone! As always, if you have any comments, suggestions or submissions for this digest, send them my way to tfitzgerald@tableau.com.

Happy Analyzing!

And it's Tuesday! Yesterday was President's day in the US, which meant we got a three day weekend here at Tableau - always a good way to start off the week

Announcements

A couple of things to announce for this week and in general.

First off, we're sad to announce that Jordan Bunker will be leaving Tableau. For those of you who don't know Jordan, he's been the man behind much of the data for the Community and Support team. He greatly improved the Crow's Nest viz and has helped several people on these forums. We wish you all the best in your next adventures Jordan, and you'll be missed!

Second, there will be a Think Data Thursday event this Thursday at 8 am PST with Tableau's Michael Chen - be sure to sign up here, if you haven't already: TDT: Raiders of the Lost Postgres - February 19, 2015

Finally, if you've never checked out the Workbook & Calculation Library, I would highly recommend it. Zen Master, Mark Jackson and Joshua Milligan, often post workbooks here. You might also start noticing more workbooks being added by some Tableau Support members - who are sharing scenarios that others often report to the team (ex: Asher Campbell shared Arc Chart Demo).

Here's some of what was happening last week --

Recognition

We had quite a few people "unlock" some Correct Answer badges this past week. Toby Erkson received the Question Slayer (50 marked correct) - and if I had to guess most of them have been marked recently in the Server Admin space. Thank you Toby for all you do for the Community.

Sankarmagesh Rajan had 25 of his responses marked as correct, thus receiving the Questions for Breakfast! badge. Sankar has only been a member since August, we appreciate all your help, and are glad to see you as a part of the Community.

Jeff James and Tableau's Matt Coles have joined the Club 10 - achieving the I Know Stuff! Thank you both!

**This is characterized by the number of responses in a thread

This week's thread was related to Tableau Public Premium, Chris Jokel asked Any way to enable export to PDF/image without enabling the download of workbook and data? james.n worked with Chris, troubleshooting various things using Tableau Server (realizing that they're very similar, but not the same). Ultimately, it looks like a feature request or an Ideas will need to be created.

Top Viewed Thread

Last week's top viewed thread was a bit of a revival thread - it was started by Alexandre DAVID in 2013 - How to count distinct users on a running period. However, Nicholas Blankevoort found it in a search and continued the conversation by sharing a solution he found. Noah Salvaterra and Jonathan Drummey prod a little further to provide more detail. Ultimately, Yuri Fal came up with a solution using Level of Detail calculations in Tableau 9.0.

Top Voted Idea

The top voted idea last week was also one that was created last week by Keith Helfrich - Granularity Explore. This idea is to provide people using Tableau the ability to better understand your data and the calculations/views that are being computed, thus making it easier to help get the visualization one might want.

Have a great rest of your week - and until next week, happy analyzing!

As always, any suggestions or submissions for this digest, please send along my way (tfitzgerald@tableausoftware.com).

Happy Monday! This past week you may have noticed the Community URL changed - it's no longer community.tableausoftware.com, it is now community.tableau.com. It was a relatively smooth transition - if you do run into anything that seems out of the ordinary, let me know!

Recognition

Two more people have received the 25 correct answers badge - "Questions for Breakfast!" - both Chris McClellan and Tableau kumar. have been quickly climbing the ranks and helping people all along the way. Thank you for your time and contributions to helping people in this community!

Thought this might be a good place to share this as well, Tableau employee badges have recently been added - so you may see the Tableau Employee or Tableau sparkle on people's profiles indicating their with Tableau.

Most Talked About Thread

**This is characterized by the number of responses in a thread

This week we have a three way tie for the most talked about threads. Tab selector was posted by Shriyanka Shetty who wants to be able to basically use actions as a way to navigate to other worksheets. Joe Oppelt provided a couple of samples for how to do this with the information provided and even "hacked" together some of the data to get hopefully, the desired outcome.

Daniel Fox asked for Help with creating a 'Calculated Field'. mahi reddy provided a starting point on the basics of writing a calculation. Mark Fraser, then, provided a little more context and asked more questions to get to the root of the problem. Tableau kumar suggested data reshaping and then, ultimately, came back with a solution with detailed steps on how he accomplished it (Daniel, if Laxman's solution solved your issue - let us know and mark it correct ).

Rahul Sahil posted Need to hide index column. He had 17 columns in his data that he wanted to show, Tableau limits the number of columns to 16. So what to do? Well, Ville Tyrväinen provided a workaround of creating a calculated field which looks like it solved the issue. KK Molugu provided another **unsupported** solution of updating the XML in the twb file.

Top Viewed Thread

Second to Prashant Sharma's New Features in Tableau 9+? thread, is a thread back from 2013 in regards to Subscription Issue in Tableau Server 8.1. Always interesting seeing which threads get the most views - subscriptions are always a hot topic when it comes to Server.

Top Voted Idea

The top voted idea is once again Dynamic parameters (21 votes this week). This blog post was posted last week so that the Dev team can continue to get feedback regarding the idea and hopefully make some part of the idea come to fruition soon: A Top Idea & Request for Feedback — Dynamic Parameters | Tableau Software

Behind Dynamic parameters, Totals and subtotals over displayed marks instead of separate calc (aka make subtotals work like Excel) posted by Jonathan Drummey (who has been updating the idea with new releases showing what needs to be done).

Have a great rest of your week! Next Monday is a US holiday (President's Day) and so this digest will be posted on Tuesday. Until then, happy analyzing!

And into February, we go! Take a peak into what was happening the last week of January below:

Recognition

What a week for people helping people and receiving badges! First, Joe Oppelt received the "Answer Wizard" badge - answering 100 questions! Joe has been extremely active in the forums for just under a year at this point - thank you Joe!

Next up, kettan and Tableau's Ben Neville received the "Question Slayer" badge - they each supplied 50 correct answers to people! Mark Fraser eats "Questions for Breakfast" after answering 25 answers correctly.

And finally, we have a couple of veteran's in the Community who have many people than this badge suggests - both Richard Leeke and Joe Mako received the "I Know Stuff!" badge (10 Correct Answers). In addition, some newer members also received this badge - Łukasz Majewski and Jeff D. Thank you everyone for your contributions!

**This is characterized by the number of responses in a thread

This week's thread started with a question by James Keuning in How hard does Tableau work to calculate dates... is it better to fix the date in the source data? The thread started with responses to James' original question and quickly went into the workings of extracts and the best ways to test how whether the calculation is taking a toll on the data source or extract. Both Jonathan Drummey and Richard Leeke provide some helpful hints to test and see the performance implications a calculation can have.

Top Viewed Thread

The post created this past week with the most views is Mike C's Need a calculated field to return data when it is exactly 1 month between two dates. Finding the end date of the next month when there are more or less days to the previous month proved to be a bit of challenge. kettan provided a couple of solutions, while Łukasz Majewski came up with a simple calculation - did this solve your issue Mike? (Let us know, by marking it correct if so )

Top Voted Idea

This week's most voted on idea (if we don't include Dynamic Parameters) was Transfer Aliases and Color Settings with Replace Data Source created by Jonathan Drummey with 11 votes in the last week. This is definitely an idea that I've voted up! However, Jonathan does provide a workaround.
