2014

This is the last week of the year, I can't believe it! Next week, I'll be creating a recap of the entire year in the Community, but here is some of what was happening this past week -

Recognition

This week, we welcome someone who probably has way more than just 100 Correct Answers marked as correct, but since we added the badge, has recently joined - Zen Master, Jonathan Drummey, now has the "Answer Wizard" badge! Thank you, thank you Jonathan on behalf of all the people you have helped!

In addition, we two people have received the "I Know Stuff!" badge (10 answers marked as correct) - Darin Coulter and one of Tableau's own - Zach Pipkin. Thank you both for all your contributions, and we continue to see more of you in the Community!

Lionel Yu asked Is it possible to use the Rows as the dimensions/measures instead of the Columns from the data source? He's referring to getting the data in Excel to show up with the columns and rows swapped. Bill Lyons and Syed Khadir Ahmed provided a couple of solutions (using the Swap button or a calculated field). Although, it looks like some SQL that Tom W provided may have solved the issue.

Most Viewed Thread

The most viewed thread of the week is related to Tableau Public. Whenever Rahul Agarwal publishes a specific view White Spaces on dashboard in front of sheets appear on his dashboard. Joe Oppelt tried to recreate it in Tableau Server, but it seems to only happen on Public. Rahul, I'll send this thread to our Public team to see if they can help out.

Top Voted Idea

This is a first - Dynamic Parameters isn't the most voted idea this week! Instead, 16+ Dimensions in crosstab - add a scrollbar & no hacks please by John Munoz had the most votes this week.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season - I know I am! Last week had a little less volume than normal, but still busy all the same. Let's take a look into what happened:

Recognition

This week, we have a new addition to the 100 Correct Answers, or the "Answer Wizard" badge, club - KK Molugu. Thank you KK for all your contributions! From answering questions to hosting a Think Data Thursday! We really appreciate what you do for this community.

Pooja Gandhi has also received the "Questions for Breakfast" badge - meaning she's had 25 of her responses marked as Correct. Pooja is a fairly new member of our community - only joining back in August, but she's already proven her worth by helping lots of people. Thank you Pooja for all your help!

We've got a tie for the most talked about thread this week, both with 15 responses and neither have been marked correct. The first is post from Huanzhi Fang asking How to show all categories in color legend? Joe Oppelt, Ville Tyrväinen and tyler garrett all provided some workarounds to show all the members of field in a legend regardless of when they're filtered out. Hopefully, one of these helped solved the issue!

The other issue was one found by Łukasz Majewski in Filter Action using calculated dimension does not work. After working with Ville Tyrväinen it looks like the solution may be to upgrade to the latest version of Tableau Desktop.

Most Viewed Thread

I'm happy to see that this post (Three Weeks From Now...) by Shawn Wallwork is our most viewed thread this week. It's not necessarily a thread about Tableau, but really shows how much of Community we have here. Everything from people sharing where they'll be for the holidays to discovering hobbies (beer, gardening, and beaches are the main ones I picked up from the thread). I consider myself lucky and proud to be a part of it!

Top Voted Idea

This week's top voted idea has to do with selecting/de-selecting sheets when creating action filters on a dashboard. Michael Nealey created this idea Have a "select all / none" button in the actions box in 2013, but it got half of it's votes (10 out of 20) this past week.

I hope everyone had a great weekend! Here's what was happening last week in the Tableau Community:

Recognition

Last week there were a few milestones broken. Grayson Deal achieved the "Question Slayer" badge - having 50 of his responses marked as correct! Thank you Grayson for ALL of your contributions!

Steve Martin and Rishabh Dhingra received the "I know stuff!" badge, by having 10 of their responses marked as correct. We all appreciate all the help you've been supplying to the Community

Last week's post was asked by lalitha p in How to display group of values in a single row. kettan has provided lalitha some examples using Jonathan Drummey's and Alex Kerin's workbooks, however, it looks like the requirements still have not been met. Lalitha, if you can provide a packaged workbook someone should be able to help you further!

Most Viewed Thread

The last two weeks have had the same thread be the most viewed - New Features in Tableau 9+? However, the second most viewed thread (most likely because of the thread mentioned below) is Joe Oppelt and Matt Lutton's thread We made a video of Sheet Swapping and Legend/Filter Popping on a dashboard.

Most Liked Content

kettan compiled Video Resources for Learning Tableau - if you haven't seen any of these resources, I highly recommend them as a source for really understanding Tableau - what and why it's doing what it does. There are videos from Jonathan Drummey, Joe Mako, Matt Lutton, Joe Oppelt and others that shouldn't be missed!

Top Voted Idea

The idea with the most votes last week (with 8) was one created back in 2012 by Bob Skaggs related to formatting a dashboard - Sizing guides (ruler, gridlines) on dashboard. I personally would love this one!

Happy Analyzing!

Hope everyone had a great week last week and is having a good holiday season. I'll be publishing the next couple iterations of the Digest on Monday mornings. Let's take a peak into what was going on this week.

Most Talked About Thread

**This is characterized by the number of responses to a thread
This week's most talked about thread was asked by Marco Baptista in regards to Many DataSources and same filters, how can I do? It took a little bit of back and forth between Shawn Wallwork and Syed Ahmed to be able to check out his workbook, once they figured it out, Syed was able to provide a solution that worked perfectly for him.

Top Viewed Thread

This week's most viewed thread was one started by Prashant Sharma in September regarding New Features in Tableau 9+?, but was probably got a lot of traffic because of the Tableau 8.3 release this past week.

Top Voted Idea

This week's most voted on idea was created by Jennie Kearnes back in 2013 for Customise the default font permanently with 9 votes.

Happy Monday! This is a couple of days late because of the US Thanksgiving holiday (hope everyone had a good one!). Things slowed down a little bit in the Community, but there always seems to be activity - no matter what time of year or day.

Recognition

Quite a few people hit the 10 Answers marked correct (aka the "I Know Stuff!" badge), including Venkat Madan Simon Runc, Mark Fraser and brad.earle.1 - thank you for all your contributions!

**Characterized by the number of responses.

Ashish Verma asked about Date functions in Tableau. Simon Runc, Joe Oppelt and Pooja Gandhi all provided some possible solutions - ultimately, it looks like Simon and Ashish were able to work together to find the solution (Ashish, can you mark the one that solved the problem as correct?)

Parv Chana had a Quick calculation question where his main concern was presenting the data to his executives on a dashboard. Shawn Wallwork asked him a question to get him thinking about how the issue is handled elsewhere, while Ville Tyrväinen confirmed one of the three potential solutions that Jonathan Drummey provided.

Top Voted Idea

This week's top voted idea is one from Shawn Wallwork that he created a while back Rework Tool Tips & Command Buttons Selection. I have a feeling it could potentially be a result of Andy Peters post: Customizing (or removing) tooltips on reference lines
