What a week last week was - lots going on! Let's take a look -

Announcements

Last week, we had a Think Data Thursday presentation by Anya A'hearn, Kelly Martin and KK Molugu in TDT: Importance of Visual Aesthetics - How to Entertain, Engage, and Empower your audience - April 23, 2015. If you missed it, it was recorded and is definitely a good one to watch. All three of them have so much talent and while their general approach is very similar, they each have their own tips and tricks that they share. You can find the video in the TDT Video Library (it's currently the last video on the page).

At the end of the TDT, the next presentation was also announced - TDT: LoD of the Rings - May 21, 2015 with Joshua Milligan, Craig Bloodworth and Bora Beran. You won't want to miss this, especially if you're still trying to figure out all the ins and outs of LoD expressions, like I am!

The Talk Data to Me webinar series are now in full swing. Register for the live webinars or check out the on-demand videos here: Talk Data to Me Webinar Series | Tableau Software.

Interested in testing your load and performance on Tableau Server? While now you can with TabJolt. Have questions or want to learn more, check out Announcing #TabJolt - A Load and Performance Testing Tool For Tableau Server posted by Tableau's Neelesh Kamkolkar.

Recognition

Two of our Community members received the "I Know Stuff!" badge last week, Ken Patton and ukasz.gierada.0, meaning they have had at least 10 of their responses marked as correct. Ken has been a member of the Community since the beginning of 2012 and has been extremely active the last couple of months - thank you Ken for helping people solve their questions! ukasz.gierada.0 has been a member since July of last year - but has been contributing by helping others and posting solutions to older threads that have solved his issues - thank you ukasz.gierada.0!

Jared Raymond asked How do I classify groups based on date calculations from converted/parsed dates? Ken Patton has been closely working with Jared to troubleshoot the issue. It appears that the main issue was the way that the data was being read by Tableau - one date was a string, while one was a date. Ultimately, it looks like they got on the same page. Jared, if on of Ken's responses solved the issue, will you mark it as correct?

Top Viewed Thread

Though this isn't THE top viewed thread, it has crept up the ranks and is in the top 4 behind the usual suspects (New Features in Tableau 9+?, Grow your own Filled Maps, and Johan's Ideas Collections). I'm talking about Jonathan Drummey's Educational Brain Teaser: Coloring the Boxes on Box and Whisker Plots. This is a fun one to read to not only see/learn/challenge yourself to a new trick, but also to see how other people rank their difficulty.

Top Voted Idea

Shawn Wallwork created the idea, Maps: Move Copyright label up (Released in 10.0) and rose to the top of last week's top voted idea with 15 votes.

Happy Monday - it's really starting to feel like spring here in Seattle! The sun's shining and we're supposed to hit the low 70's today

Announcements

This Thursday, we have a Think Data Thursday with KK Molugu, Kelly Martin and Anya A'hearn on TDT: Importance of Visual Aesthetics - How to Entertain, Engage, and Empower your audience - April 23, 2015. I definitely recommend tuning into this one!

You may have noticed a couple of people in the Community who have a new badge that looks like icon32x32.png. These people are part of new program that we are rolling out known as the Tableau Ambassadors for the Community Forums. These people are recognized by Tableau for their exceptional leadership and contributions to the Tableau Community. They represent the spirit what the Tableau Community really is - we are lucky to have such passionate individuals among us. A more formal blog post will come out a little later introducing all of them, but please welcome our first group of Tableau Ambassadors!:

Recognition

Last week, Sankarmagesh Rajan achieved the "Answer Wizard" badge - meaning 100 of his responses have been marked as Correct! Thank you Sankar, for all of your help answering questions!

Pooja Gandhi received the "Question Slayer" badge for her work in answering 50 questions correctly. Pooja apparently has a yellow Lamborghini mouse that she navigates the community with (check out here comments below the idea here: http://community.tableau.com/ideas/3996) - hope we get a pic soon! Thank you for all your help in the Community, Pooja!

Larsen Rennie asked a question Regarding Data Blending, in which Jonathan Drummey and Pooja Gandhi worked with Larsen to try troubleshooting the issue. There was a little back and forth between the three of them to figure out what exactly the issue was, but eventually, Jonathan was able pinpoint it - the secondary data source having a finer granularity. Looks like Larsen still needs help and may need to go about solving his problem in a different way.

Top Viewed Thread

One of the highest viewed threads last week (not the top viewed - that still belongs to Prashant Sharma's New Features in Tableau 9+? | Tableau Support Community), was Color Legend posted by David Fuentes. Though this was posted and solved two weeks ago with a couple different solutions from Shawn Wallwork, kettan, and Jonathan Drummey, last week the conversation continued. Jonathan's solution ultimately solved the issue using a highlight action filter - which he shared some insight on how they work compared to regular action filters.

Top Voted Idea

Last week's top voted idea was one that was created by Tableau's own Loic Grange, in Multi-Values Parameters. Last week 9 votes were added for a total of 496 up-votes of this feature.

Happy Monday! All in all this was a fairly busy week - over 1,100 posts (and that was even with a bunch of people out on spring breaks and vacations). Take a look to some of what was going on -

Announcements

Last week was the release of Tableau's latest version - 9.0. If you haven't already, I would definitely recommend making the upgrade! Check out all the new features here: Tableau 9.0: Smart Meets Fast. And if you're looking for additional resources, Patrick  Van Der Hyde has been keeping track of most of them in 9.0 Release Resources.

Recognition

Last week, we had some big accomplishments. First, Noah Salvaterra achieved the "Answer Wizard" badge. Noah, Zen Master, hit the ground running after a small hiatus from the Community after he had his son. I think we can all agree we're happy to see Noah back and in full swing. Thank you, Noah!

Tableau kumar also received the "Answer Wizard" (or 100 answers marked as correct) this past week. Tableau kumar has been a member of the Community since 2012, and has been super active the last year. Thank you for all of your help in the forums Tableau kumar!

Manoj Ramachandra and Tableau's Bora Beran achieved the "Questions for Breakfast!" badge (25 answers marked correct). They both have been providing a lot of help and insight to people in the Community over the last couple of months - thank you both for your contributions!

David Fuentes posted a question about a Formula that he was having an issue with. Manoj Ramachandra, Shawn Wallwork and Joe Oppelt provided possible reasons about what was wrong with the syntax. Once, David posted the workbook, Amir Shareghi was able to take a closer look and provide a workable solution (the original formula was comparing floats to strings - so a quick switch of fields solved it).

Top Viewed Thread

This week's most viewed thread was started by Larsen Rennie in Regarding Calculated field. This thread is very impressive - and shows the types of conversations/dedication people have in this community. This thread of 53 posts was entirely between Larsen and mahi reddy. Mahi solved Larsen's original question, but when there were follow up questions, Mahi continued working with and answering them.

Top Voted Idea

The idea with the most votes this past week was Simon Morris's ability to connect to Google Spreadsheets as a datasource with 9 votes. This is now in Beta - and thanks to Tamas Foldi, he shares how this is made possible in Google Spreadsheet with Tableau Web Data Connector posted in the The specified item was not found.. Thanks for sharing, Tamas - this is awesome!

Announcements

A new webinar series known as Talk Data to Me is getting started next week. The series will be quick 30 minute presentations on some of the most popular Tableau topics by Tableau employees. They're definitely worth checking out - Talk Data to Me Webinar Series | Tableau Software.

Recognition

Last week, two people earned the "Question Slayer" badge, in other words, 50+ of their responses have been recognized by other people as being the correct answer. Alexander Mou has been a member of the Community since early last year, and has been extremely active the last couple of months. Thank you for all the help you've provided people, Alexander!

Bill Lyons also received this badge last week. I had the pleasure of meeting Bill last Thursday at the Tableau 9.0 San Francisco Roadshow. Bill loves a challenge when it comes to Tableau and thus has been helping a lot of people along the way - thanks Bill!

Jeffrey Strauss achieved the "Questions for Breakfast!" badge - 25+ of his responses were marked as correct. Jeffrey has been spending a lot of time in the Server & Online Administration space and will likely be able to help you with many of your Tableau Server questions. Thank you, Jeffrey for all your helpful answers!

Larsen Rennie asked a question Regarding Parameter where the end user should be able to select the correct dates. Sankarmagesh Rajan amd Tableau kumar provided similar answers within 5 minutes of each other (they must have been working on it at the same time ), however, it was mahi reddy who ultimately solved the problem by writing an "If/then" calculation for each month.

Top Viewed Thread

Last week's top viewed thread was New Features in Tableau 9+? Prashant Sharma not only started the thread, but he has also been updating it with related links from Tableau and other blogs giving tips and how-to's with 9.0. Keep an eye on your inboxes for the imminent release!

Top Voted Idea

We've got some new ideas climbing to the top for most voted on last week. Last week, the Option to cache per workbook on Tableau Server created by Brandon Cole had 12 votes for a total of 19 votes after creating it just 2 weeks ago!
